In July 2017 I joined 4 other successful applicants on a vacation scheme at Eversheds Sutherland in Cambridge. I chose to experience the corporate and litigation departments during my time there. In my first week I worked in corporate alongside a trainee solicitor undertaking tasks for the corporate partner Glynne Standfield. The Cambridge office focused on charity law, something I hadn't previously worked on, and I found the work engaging. During this week I compiled detailed research for Glynne, wrote a draft article and proofread documents among other tasks. In my second week I worked in litigation alongside the partner Richard New. This office focused on real estate litigation which I found incredibly interesting. During this week I read a large number of leases, compiled draft emails for clients, conducted research for Richard and proofread documents. I also worked closely with my fellow applicants on a fundraising task for WaterAid, raising just under £100. I found the entire experience incredibly rewarding as it showed me what it would be like to work within a large and successful firm.

I worked part-time at Halo Conferences and Events, the catering company for St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton. Here I performed a number of roles depending on my shift. If I was staffed for a match day, I would be under the seating area as a general till operator. Alternatively, I could be helping to provide a 5-star service to our box guests. This included food running to the boxes, helping the designated box host or turning over glasses for the private bars. During my time there I also worked private functions, also a 5-star service, for hundreds of guests at a time. My roles for private events included: dressing a large function room to precise standards, waitressing, serving food to customers in the event of a buffet, wine waitressing, turning over glasses and polishing glasses and cutlery after they were washed at the end of a function. This job was my first non-academic experience of hard work, and I enjoyed the variety of work available to me. My position at Halo gave me my first experience of the inner workings of a business and providing services to large numbers of people.

For 4 days in February 2014 I was invited for some work experience at Shentons Solicitors, a private law firm. I explored work in 3 legal departments during my time here including wills and probate. I attended court twice, firstly with a criminal lawyer at Winchester Magistrates Court and secondly to a custody hearing in Basingstoke. I was allowed to sit in on the pre-court hearing with the barrister and their client for the latter. I already had the idea that I would like to go into law from doing my A-Level, but this experience made me realise that it was the field I definitely wanted to go into. I found this short placement very rewarding and I came away from it enlightened. It enabled me to see how a law firm operates and experience all of the services offered to clients.
