Aileen was an effective member of our 2013-14 AmeriCorps team. During her national service term, her afterschool enrichment activities were well planned, thoughtful, and age appropriate. She truly exceled in planning and leading high quality enrichment activites. Aileen's attitude and teaching approach were well received by the students with whom she worked. The students easily connected with her and aimed to please. This was a testament to Aileen's skill working with school-aged children. In all circumstances Aileen followed and implemented relevant program operating protocols and procedures. She served our clients with respect and dignity. Overall, Aileen was a true team player and did everthing that was asked of her.

The Davies Community Service Leader Program integrates Allegheny students into organizations across the Meadville area for the course of a full academic year or summer. Distinct from other service-learning programs, Davies Community Service Leaders do not simply work as volunteers, but rather collaborate as active partners with community organizations on unique projects. One of the many goals of the Davies Program is to work towards furthering the Allegheny tradition of campus-community partnership and civic engagement. During my service work with the Davies program, I was an ambassador between Allegheny College and Wesbury Retirement Community, located in Meadville. I was responsible for leading line dance classes and helping the Activities Director, Greg Brink, with data entry. During my spring semester, Greg and I put together an Improv Class specifically designed to help individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer's or dementia. These classes consisted of drum circles, theater exercises and movement. Before and after each class, I would record the blood pressure and heart rate of each individual. Over the course of seven classes, we saw a reduction of blood pressures and a lowering of resting heart rates. Show less
