Libya I had an opportunity to shadow an Engineer on the drilling rig which enabled me to witness the drilling of a water injection well. I was fascinated and really interested to see the procedures used by the driller engineers and geologist, who also showed me the mud, cementer, top drive and tool pusher aspects of drilling. While staying on site near the rig, I realised how my theoretical lectures could be applied into practice, looking at difficulties that could occur and the geological factors needed to overcome these. This was very beneficial, giving me an opportunity to gain knowledge, experience and problem solving in a practical capacity. Being involved with the day to day running of the engineering work also gave me the unique opportunity, to see first-hand any complications unfold and the solutions used to resolve them. One such issue was a seepage of mud to the surface, caused by a crack in the cellar wall. The quick reaction of the Engineer and their ability to resolve the issue convinced me that this was the career path I wished to pursue with the prospect of securing employment within this industry.
