This property lies on the shores of the Volga River, south of its confluence with the River Kama and south of the capital of Tatarstan, Kazan. It contains evidence of the medieval city of Bolgar, an early settlement of the civilization of Volga Bulgarians, that existed between the seventh and fifteenth centuries AD and was the first capital of the Golden Horde in the thirteenth century. Bolgar represents the historical cultural exchanges and transformations of Eurasia over several centuries that played a pivotal role in the formation of civilizations, customs and cultural traditions. The project aims to contribute to the conservation and interpretation of the archaeological attributes of the Outstanding Universal Value of the property and to raise awareness of the local community about the World Heritage status, the value of the site and its sustainable management. The aim of the project is to support and promote stronghold constructions of the Absheron Peninsula. By means of both educational and practical experiences, we offer volunteers experiences related to the sustainable management of natural and cultural heritage. Furthermore, the project promoting the active participation of volunteers and raises awareness about the value of World Heritage in Azerbaijan, with a particular focus on the role of youth. It also raises greater awareness about the need for community participation in World Heritage preservation. The Local partners were Azerbaijan Youth Foundation, Executive Power of Khazar district, The Ministry of Culture of Azerbaijan Republic. Show less
