My attatchment in Institute of Radiotherapy and Oncology, HKL. This institute is one of the main reference centre for cancer patient. During this clinical attachment, I learned and observe various radiotherapy procedure and treatment. i also had the chance to learned about the 3D CT simulation procedure that acquire the patient's CT images for the medical physicist to use for the treatment planning.During this clinical attchment, I had the chance to work out and improve my patient positioning skills and immobilizing device placement on patients with various cancers including head and neck, thorax, pelvis, breast and also extremities. I also had the opportunity to learn about the laser placement on the patient's tatoo and shift the placement to the isocentre. it is important that we need to learn about the laser placement as we need to ensure trhe radiation beam to focus on the cancers at maximum while minimizing the exposure on the normal tissue.I also was assigned to perform 5 case studies on - Head and Neck cancer- Central Nervous system cancer- Respiratory cancer-Breast cancer-Endocrine cancerPerforming these case studies are important as we need to understand on how we treat the cancers. In order to understand, I need to read every case notes and treatment sheet of every patient in the department. by doing this, we can learn more on how to become a good radiation therapist with excellent competency. On this procedure, I had the chance to learn on how to operate the mobile c-arm fluoroscopic machine for guiding the surgeon when inserting the nail. It was difficult at first as I was needed to direct the fluoroscopic machine under the command of the surgeon. but somehow, I manage to perform it smoothly. I also learned on how to communicate with the other surgical team members as communication is the main aspect in order for staff to operate in a surgical suite as smooth as possible Show less

On this clinical posting session, we were placed in the Radiotherapy and Oncology Department, PPUKM. Here, we were exposed with the situation and working enviroment in the department. For the past 2 weeks we learned more on : -Patient positioning for treatment -Workflow -Radiation Protection -Immobilizing device -Infection control -Patient Care Although we did not fully learned about the radiotherapy procedure yet, but it did not stop us from doing the radiotherapy treatment. under the supervision of the senior radiation therapist, they taught us on how to read the medical sheet and how to position the patients based on the sheet as well. we also had the chance to practice our radiation therapy procedure in the evening when there was no patient. after 2 weeks we fully understand the radioation tretament procedure for head and neck, thorax and pelvis. To conclude, this clinical attatchment was fun as we had the chance to apply and implement our knowledge from ethics and patient. we also learned on performing the procedure hands on and it was helpful during our theory class.
