I report and write eight to 10 stories per week balancing in-depth features and breaking news. My stories cover the environment, county government, social justice, health, science, local and regional politics, education and economics in Durango and across Southwest Colorado. In addition to building and maintaining a network of local, statewide and national sources, I file public information requests, build databases and conduct statistical analyses. I also photograph stories while on field assignments. Show less

I reported on subjects ranging from environmental justice movements and environmental education on Chicago’s South Side to brown bear conservation in Alaska and climate change in the Midwest. I wrote longform features, service stories, profiles, Q&A's, news stories, personal essays and produced videos. I also worked with HTML, CSS and Javascript to visualize data. I assisted with the initial development of the project. I wrote the definition of “Climatastrophe,” the statement of purpose, and set the questions that would drive the project. My primary responsibility was the research and development of pilot multimedia news projects on climate change. I also worked to develop crowd source funding. I assisted with the day-to-day operations of a 1-acre diverse vegetable farm. Activities included bed preparation, planting, trellising, harvesting and packing, among others. I learned small farm management and sustainable agricultural practices for fertilization, pest management, and soil health. I also helped guide and teach about sustainable agriculture. I was awarded a Deans’ Summer Research Fellowship for research examining the ancestral Puebloan agricultural technique of pebble-mulching and climate change. I conducted a 3-month agricultural experiment to determine the effects of pebble-mulching on plant growth and soil moisture in a humid Southeastern climate. My written thesis discussed the potential application of pebble-mulching for farmers in the Southeast as they adapt to climate change. I performed all daily field work for puma research projects in Northern California. I worked to locate trail cameras that had been lost, maintain cameras, and coordinated with local wildlife rangers to place new camera traps. I assisted with video analysis and the creation of a puma sighting database. I also spoke about puma conservation at local education events. I performed daily field work duties for the Great Bear Foundation’s Chilkoot River research project in Haines, Alaska. I recorded bear surveys, made daily observations of bear behavior, and managed the project’s trail cameras. I also helped create a database to identify and mitigate human-bear conflict. While on the river, I acted as an educator and monitor and spoke with visitors about bear behavior to reduce conflict.
