At Olin, Adva is a tireless advocate for students and an invaluable resource for faculty members. I've had the chance to work closely with Adva in a number of different initiatives and it is my great pleasure to write this recommendation. Since her arrival, Adva has helped the College to make great strides in its academic support structures. One area where Adva shines is in her dedication to making classrooms supportive places where all students can thrive. She has worked toward this goal from multiple angles. For one, she has helped educate Olin faculty on frameworks such as universal design for learning (both through co-leading workshops of her own and paying to send faculty members to conferences on the topic). Additionally, she is always willing to have a conversation with a faculty member about how to best support students. I've personally had countless conversations with Adva about how to design my course to support students and also how to support individual students who may be having trouble. Adva has also done a lot of work at the programming level to increase the resources and training for students with the aim of setting them up for success at Olin. Highlights of this work include developing the Olin First Year Experience, which teaches students crucial skills for their time at Olin, and her work to create a team of student academic skills coaches, who provide peer mentorship to students on topics such as workload management and exploring one's interests within the Olin environment. Additionally, Adva has done a lot to scaffold academic advising at Olin (a structure that pairs students with a faculty advisor) by providing advisor training and processes to help with common facets of advising (e.g., intervening when students are having a tough time academically and helping students plan their courses over there four years at the College). Underlying all of these great initiatives that Adva has shepherded is Adva's tremendous spirit of goodwill and kindness. This spirit is extended to everyone with the goal of making Olin the best place it can be. Adva is a true cornerstone of Olin, and working with her has been such a pleasure for me.

Adva started at Olin at almost the same time I did and she quickly became indispensable in my work with students. Anytime I had a student or advisee who was struggling, I knew I could count on her to help handle the situation sensitively, work closely with the student (and with me as applicable) to plan and implement solutions, and understand each student and each situation well enough to see critical nuances. In even the most difficult situations (the most emotional for students, the most difficult to solve), she’s been endlessly patient and diligent, able to balance the students’ struggles with a hopeful outlook and find constructive resolutions over and over again. Adva has also been a fabulous colleague: knowledgeable, constructive, incredibly hard-working, generous with her expertise and her time, creative in her problem solving, and always kind and compassionate. The students are vocal about their admiration and affection for her, and it’s easy to see why—they know that in her they have someone who genuinely cares about them and works unbelievably hard to help them, though not by doing things for them or papering over things that are hard. She has a miraculous way of sitting in difficulty with someone and helping find a way out. I treasure her as a colleague; we and our students are so very lucky to have her.

Serving at the intersection of academic and student affairs, I speak regularly with students who are working on a wide range of issues, either personally or academically, and try to help them locate and connect to appropriate resources and services. I also oversee academic support systems, which includes monitoring academic progress and coordinating peer tutoring as well as regular consultation with faculty stakeholders. A large part of my role is in the management of the College's academic advising system. This involves understanding the advising climate and facilitating best practices, training faculty advisors, and assisting with any concerns that they may have. Part of my role is also to coordinate all disability services to students at Olin. This includes providing needed accommodations to students as well as continuous support and services for students with disabilities. I also serve as a support person to any student involved in a Title IX dispute or related issue. Furthermore, I help to design and implement wellness-related programs. Show less
