Senior Clinical Pharmacist, Paediatric Critical Care

Apr 2010 - Present
I am the senior clinical pharmacist in Paediatric Critical Care (PCC) which I deliver part time while studying for my PhD in Pharmacy Practice at the University of Manchester. I have worked in this field in 15 years and am a national leader, having authored several research papers, and am currently writing a text book chapter for a European handbook of paediatric and neonatal intensive care. I have a strong interest in medicines safety, and human factors. In 2018 I published the first qualitative study into the causative factors of prescribing errors in PCC, and am leading the drive to standardise infusion concentrations along with collaborators across the NHS and industry. During my time in PCC I have also helped drive the move to balanced maintenance fluids in paediatric practice, putting the UK well ahead of the evidence curve worldwide. I am also a natural leader having worked managing a number of teams and working groups over the last decade. My research experience makes me the ideal person to explore and operationalise new services and new models of working. My future plans involve the development of novel services for paediatric pharmacy services to Emergency Departments and system-wide initiatives to improve access to safe, effective medicines wherever they are. Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Paediatric Pharmacy Practice

Sep 2014 - Present
Currently on a short interruption to support the Paediatric Critical Care service at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital during the COVID19 pandemic. In calmer times, I have been undertaking novel research into medication safety. I hold a personal award from the NIHR (£242,000) funding my PhD in human factors and medication safety in hospitalised children and young people in the North of England. Additionally I run a small data-focussed research project in collaboration with Becton,Dickinson and Company UK examining the impact of "smart pump" technology in acute hospitals in the UK. I am looking to build on and develop these links and skills in the future to build a medication safety research programme focussed on child health and big data. Show less

Expert Adviser
-
2007 - 2013
The BNFc is the authoritative medication reference for neonates and children in over 30 countries worldwide. Initially I started with BNFc in a consulting role as an expert adviser in Neonatal pharmacy, but was quickly invited to comment on contentious issues pertinent to medicines usage in paediatrics. I have shown considerable autonomy and the ability to debate the finer points of pharmaceutical research with eminent paediatrician and am proud of my record of influencing the content of the BNFc. Latterly I was invited to join the Paediatric Formulary Committee of the BNFc as one of the 3 pharmacists on the committee. I am deeply honoured to hold this position, and treat the responsibility that comes with it with great respect. In my membership of the PFC I have been able to establish policy on the dosing of caffeine which had previously been ambiguous. I have influenced and informed the debate regarding intravenous aciclovir, and set the wheels in motion for the expansion of the intravenous salbutamol monograph to include discrete parameters for referring patients to critical care. Senior Clinical Pharmacist, Paediatric Critical Care
-
Apr 2005 - Apr 2010
I spent five years developing and integrating the place of the pharmacy team within the PICU team, by first integrating myself into the clinical team in a day-to-day position, and later identifying and planning services in areas that did not benefit. I developed skills in the pharmaceutical care of patients on Extracorporeal Life Support which I have shared with countless other team members, and I helped develop, implement and improve the first and so far only successful electronic prescribing system in a PICU in the United Kingdom.
