The duty of a Swarthmore RA is to ensure the well-being of their residents, and of the campus community as a whole. Swarthmore RA's do not have punitive power; our goal is not to get people in trouble, but to help residents feel comfortable enough to share their needs. RA's have a variety of administrative- and safety-related responsibilities, but building relationships with my residents through weekly hall meetings and periodic check-ins were the most effective ways to provide support. As one of the first LGBT+ organizations in Mexico, employees of CODISE wear many hats as they support their local community as well as help lead a burgeoning national movement. In my time at CODISE I was able to participate in a variety of their undertakings -- attending their art gallery openings, traveling to Mexico City for the 3rd Annual National LGBT+ Conference, and assisting in securing continued funding from the government. The bulk of my work, however, consisted of working with a team to set up mobile HIV/Syphilis testing sites in order to provide free testing services to members of the LGBT+ community in Guadalajara. This public health campaign was a year-long project and a continuation of similar work that CODISE has done. Part of the team administered tests, while the part that I worked with solicited passerby to promote our campaign and talk them through any questions or doubts.

    • Swarthmore Tour Guide
      • Jan 2015 - May 2017

Swarthmore tour guides highlight the unique features of Swarthmore College while leading prospective students and their families on 1-1.5 hour long tours around our gorgeous campus. It was always my goal to communicate an honest portrayal of the College and provide visitors with the ability to make the informed decision as to whether or not Swarthmore would be a good fit for them. Juntos is a non-profit organization that provides services to the migrant Latinx population in Philadelphia and organizing political actions and campaigns for migrant rights. During my time at Juntos, I opened the office daily and checked phone messages. If it was a Monday, I would prepare for our weekly meeting where community members would discuss their issues and concerns; if it was a Wednesday, I would ready myself for the afternoon youth meeting for educating youth on college readiness and social justice issues. Every week was different -- some weeks we held workshops informing community members on applying for an ITIN so they might open a business, and the next we would hold a clinic to help youth navigate DACA applications. Some days would consist of case management for community members in need of resources or help, while others would be busy with organizing a large-scale political action. As one of 4 people in the office I was part of the promotion and management of these events, gaining an understanding of issues in immigration as well as the ability to balance multiple projects at once.
