Aug 2013 - Aug 2017
My research focused on middle atmosphere dynamics, chemistry and radiative transfer. I utilized multiple data sets from satellite and meteorological reanalyses products to assess the frequency of elevated stratopause (ES) events in historical data by creating an algorithm that infers event occurrence using lower-altitude proxies.

May 2011 - Aug 2013
I participated in 3 10-week internships (summers of 2011, 2012, and 2013). My research focused on the middle and upper atmosphere, ionosphere, and solar coupling processes. I utilized various satellite data, as well as the Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere-Electrodynamnics General Circulation Model (TIME-GCM) for my work. SOARS is an undergraduate-graduate bridge program aimed at increasing diversity in the atmospheric sciences. Each protege is expected to perform research on their project, and submit a publication-quality research paper at the end of each summer. Proteges are also required to give two presentations on their work, and create a poster to present by the end of each summer. I worked on a joint project between Mines and the Japanese Experiment Module Extreme Universe Space Observatory (JEM-EUSO) international collaboration. JEM-EUSO is planned to board the International Space Station (ISS) after 2020, with a five-year mission to observe ultra high energy cosmic rays, and identify their source. JEM-EUSO is planned to board the International Space Station (ISS) after 2020, with a five-year mission to observe ultra high energy cosmic rays, and identify their source. My advisor and I worked on a proposal to test the single-photon counting capabilities for the photomultiplier tubes that will be used on JEM-EUSO. I calculated the number of expected photons at the detector given specific atmospheric conditions and ranges for balloon height and distance to determine ideal conditions and positions for test flights. I also assisted my adviser in completing the test-flight proposal, which was later funded. Show more Show less
