    • Research Project: Explosive Blast Resistance of 3D Woven Carbon-Epoxy Composites
      • May 2016 - Dec 2016

WHAT I DO: As a textile engineer specializing in fibre-reinforced composites, I designed and performed explosive blast tests on newly-developed 3D woven carbon composites.WHY IT MATTERS: With an ever-increasing threat of terrorist attacks, the need for proper defence structures to withstand bomb blasts consistently becomes more important. Fibre-reinforced composites as means of protection have successfully been implemented for many years. One drawback of conventional multi-layer woven structures is the detachment of plies (delamination). In order to tackle these shortcomings, a reinforcement in the out-of-plane direction is inserted: Z-binder yarns.HOW IT WORKS: Through material characterization tests according to ASTM standards and non-destructive analyses, I was able to quantify the potential of 3D woven composites for naval and aerospace applications.SPECIALTIES: Explosive blast testing, ASTM standardized testing, Statistical analysis, Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray computed microtomography, Vacuum-bag resin infusion
