Experience

    • Registered Physiotherapist
      • Jul 2022 - Present

https://www.sheddonphysio.com/physio-sports-clinic-sst-oakville/ • This location serves as a satellite clinic representing Sheddon Physiotherapy. This has been a unique opportunity for me as I get to devote a portion of my caseload to high-level athletes (baseball, soccer, hockey, basketball). • SST has a fully equipped gym where clients can develop their strength, power, and speed through structured and non-structured sessions. Working in an environment like this provides an excellent bridge between the rehab and strength & conditioning world. This way end-stage recovery blends seamlessly with maximum athletic output. • Working at this clinic has afforded me the opportunity to develop administrative and marketing skills as a result of the increased independence inherent to running a clinic without administrative staff. https://www.sheddonphysio.com/adrian-fils/ • This has been the primary clinic where I have developed from a Resident to now mentoring other students as a Registered Physiotherapist. • As a sports clinic, I have developed a niche in treating athletes. In my mind, this is anyone who participates in a meaningful activity. • The high volume nature of this clinic (on average 15 patients per day) allows me to see a wide breadth of injuries and has helped me develop a very strong foundation as an MSK practitioner. • This was my first exposure to working in a modern clinical environment that challenged the typical model seen in most physiotherapy clinics. • At Umana I was able to utilize longer treatment times with more spread-out visits which helped in the management of patients on the tail end of recovery working towards a specific physical goal. • This clinic was equipped with a full gym which solidified my framework around using exercise therapy as a form of treatment. • Although exercise-based interventions will not work for every patient, working in this environment proved to me that getting a patient to 90% of function does not cut it. Unfortunately, this is a common occurrence in the rehab world because the average clinic is not well equipped with the tools needed to access change at these later stages. As such, I now utilize more objective screening measures as a way to instill confidence in my patients and make recovery less abstract. Show less

      • A challenging final placement where I worked with three clinical instructors to get a varied approach that helped me build the Ax/Tx tyle I use today. • Big emphasis on time management of a busy caseload and efficiency with my charting. • Special opportunities came from the clinics associated with the Team Canada Paralympics team along with specialization in vestibular rehab, and temporomandibular mobilization techniques.

      • I spent 6 weeks working in Collingwood which provided a more rural experience, with high patient follow-up. Most of the patients I worked with were seen on a biweekly basis which provided a great environment to track my progressions and get creative. • The population base was diverse including MVA/WSIAB cases and their associated documentation. • I gained exposure to introductory-level MSK clinical patterns which helped me establish a strong foundation to build my Tx/Ax skills. Additional experience was gained working with an avid cycling community where I was able to guide road bike fitting sessions. • Exposure to patients with concussion allowed me to appreciate the timelines of recovery for this injury and develop better ways to foster rehabilitation with aerobic activity as a staple of this process. • Oct 2019 - Nov 2019

      • In this 5-week internship I worked with a large spectrum of neurological patients (post-stroke, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy etc...) in a private practice setting. • All therapists at this clinic were Bobath certified which gave me perspective on a novel approach to neurological rehabilitation. As a result, I now value the importance of challenging various aspects of the nervous system to optimize conditions for motor learning in a wide range of patient populations and stages of recovery. • Apr 2019 - May 2019

      • I spent 6 weeks working between two units at the Toronto General Hospital. My mornings were spent in the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU) and afternoon in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). • This placement was very emotionally challenging as we would often see these patients on what they would consider their worst days. Despite the challenges, I gained a massive appreciation for the capacity of the human body. With enough persistence, we were able to return our patients to a new normal through mobility training early on in their recovery. Show less
