For 6 weeks, I was a Fast Stream Summer Intern at the UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry, where I worked on communications as well as policy and research. Some of my main tasks included: drafting Baroness Hallett’s opening statement on July 21st, which received huge media attention; creating a comprehensive list of international experts to testify to the Inquiry; and giving a presentation to senior civil servants on the design of previous public Inquiries and using that to advise on the design of the Covid Inquiry going forward. I scored highly in my end-of-internship evaluation, receiving the Fast Pass Award, which will allow me to be fast-tracked to the ‘final assessment centre’ stage of the Fast Stream application process, should I ever choose to apply. • Sep 2021 - Dec 2021

I was a part-time and at times full-time bookseller at one of Edinburgh’s busiest bookstores. I was responsible for selling books, giving recommendations, managing stock and online orders using company software, answering phones, and cashing up tills at the end of each day, often closing the shop. My colleagues and I also oversaw large events with authors, which allowed me to work with people such as Ed Miliband and Bernadine Evaristo. Working full-time during the extremely busy Christmas season, I learnt to have the stamina to work consecutive 10-hour shifts, remaining calm and productive in a high-stress environment whilst continuing to assist the public politely and professionally.
