Work Experience Programme
-
Aug 2022 - Aug 2022
Took part in a 5 day hybrid work experience programme run by HSBC, with 4 days being completed online and a 1 day physical placement with the strategy and planning team at HSBC’s global headquarters in Canary Wharf. A variety of topics were covered in the online sessions, ranging from CVs, personal statements and interview skills, to the structure of HSBC as a global bank, career pathways within HSBC and financial wellbeing. Took the opportunity to ask questions and develop my understanding about how the cornerstones of HSBC’s high level strategy filtered down to the work completed on a daily basis, as well as shaping the activity of the bank in the long term. - Day 1: Investment banking day. Consisted of talks from Will de Lucy — the CEO of Amplify Trading about the key roles played by an investment banker and what the job consists of on a daily basis. I then participated in an online investment banking simulation, where my role was to communicate with clients and set appropriate prices to sell stocks and shares to them for. All the students partaking in the simulation were able to have an influence on the market and on each other, which resulted in unprecedented fluctuations and additional considerations of how to appropriately buy and sell stocks in order to make a profit. - Day 2: Asset management day. Consisted of talks from Will de Lucy — the CEO of Amplify Trading about the key roles played by someone employed in asset management and what the job consists of on a daily basis. I then participated in an online asset management simulation, where I managed a virtual portfolio over the course of a simulated year, ensuring to appropriately rebalance the percentage invested in different stocks, bonds and commodities based on events occurring in the simulation in order to outperform the set baseline. Day 1: The trading floor. Consisted of a range of learning activities from which I was able to gather information about the career progression of an investment banker, the structure of an investment bank and relevant theory e.g. bid-offer, capital (debt/ equity), capital markets (DCM/ECM), long and short positions etc. Participated in a trading simulation in which I applied the concepts of fundamental and technical analysis that I had learnt about to make investment decisions in response to news events and trends. Participated in a group asset management simulation in which we invested and managed a £100million portfolio over a simulated period of 12 months, balancing the short and long positions that we had taken on various equities, bonds, currencies, commodities, cryptocurrencies and real estate over the course of the simulation in response to provided information and independent research under timed conditions in order to maximise profit and to outperform the baseline. Day 2: Corporate finance. Consisted of a range of learning activities about the purchase and sale of companies, including key concepts such as fundamental value, discounted cash flow (DCF), EBITDA etc. Participated in a group M&A simulation of the sale of a company, acting as an investment bank and going through from initial pitch, company valuation (accounting for factors such as potential synergies and future growth rate), client pushback to the final sale of the company. Participated in a simulation activity acting as ESG (environmental, social, governance) consultants for an investment bank to design an ESG framework for responsible investment after consideration of the equator principles. Worked with one other person to design a viable solution for astronauts to travel to mars. The section I worked on included how to mimic gravity while in space in order to protect the health of the astronauts, the design of the spacecraft and the propulsion systems used in order to enable it to reach mars as well as the living spaces onboard.
