My clinical placement site: Prisma Health is the largest private non-profit healthcare system in South Carolina. It is a 641-bed regional community teaching medical center in Columbia, SC. Prisma Health serves more than 22,000 patients each year from across the state and beyond. As a regional academic medical center and hospital with more than 125 years of service to Columbia, its goal is to improve the health of all South Carolinians by enhancing clinical quality, the patient experience, and access to affordable care as well as conducting clinical research and training the next generation of medical professionals. My duties as a chaplain resident, entail pastoral care coverage of 6 medical departments: Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU), Trauma 7 West, Hartwell, and the Emergency Department (ED). My focus as a spiritual caregiver and pastor was to give emotional and spiritual comfort to patients and their respective families in moments of their greatest joy and deepest sadness. My work centered on attending to the spiritual and emotional needs of patients, their respective families, and staff, via bedside visits, grief support, crisis management, and death and dying consolations in a multi-cultural environment. Additionally, my duties included participation in individual and group supervision; completing required reading and writing assignments; and sharing in pulling on-call/on-duty rotations with other pastoral care staff.
