The Cardiff Award is an employability award that rewards and recognises students involved in extracurricular activities at Cardiff University and the employability skills they develop through the programme. The Award is entirely extracurricular and self-managed. Students who complete the programme do this in their own time, outside of their studies. My responsibilities include:-Providing a professional and friendly welcome to all students, parents, visitors and telephone callers to the division.-Acting as an out of hours point of contact by assisting the Residences Management Team in the smooth running of a particular student residences site with 1,200 student customers-Providing first line support and information to students and directing students to the Residences Management Team following provision of first line support and information-Signposting students to other sources of University advice and departments as appropriate-Providing pastoral care for student customers-Helping student customers and conference delegates settle in, and assist with any problems they may encounter throughout their stay-Establishing and maintaining a good working relationship with Campus Patrol Officers and to assist such security personnel as necessary when requested-To re-admit students to rooms until midnight if required, ensuring the lockout book is always signed-To patrol the residences site periodically, reporting concerns and safety hazards, particularly lighting, as applicable-To reset trip switches -To report all incidents, accidents and maintenance faults in the Incident Book daily-To actively participate in site specific fire evacuation procedures-To respond to emergencies / incidents as instructed whilst waiting for the Residences Management Team, security personnel or emergency services-To attend regular meetings with the Residences Management Team.-To participate in University policies on Energy & Water Management, Environment and Recycling and encouraging student customers to close windows, switch off lights and electrical equipment, including personal computers-To attend and actively participate in the Student Warden Training and other related events, such as University Open Days

Student Mentor, Cardiff Business School

As a Student Mentor I lead a small group of mentees from Cardiff Business School and I am part of a mentoring community.My role involves helping first year Accounting and Finance students with their transition to university life, to guide them in developing their academic skills and answering any questions that they may have. I arrange and conduct meetings with my group of mentees on a fortnightly basis, covering a range of academic-related and support activities by facilitating discussion in small groups, encouraging social interaction, problem solving and self-sufficiency amongst the mentees. I maintain contact with my mentees outside group discussions as appropriate and I send a brief progress report after each meeting to the Academic Skills and Mentoring team to update the team on the content of the session and the mentee's attendance.
