During Summer 2016, I filled in at NHS Highland as a respite coordinator. Old or sick individuals require part time or full time care from workers, and it was my job to find alternative housing for the affected when the care giver was unable to look after their client. This may be due to the care giver requiring a holiday (respite) for example, after long periods of continuous care. Coordinating with carers, care homes and their occupants, I managed the respite schedules of 14 care facilities, with the goal of achieving maximum occupancy. This required the strong ability to communicate via email and phone the availability of space of partnered care homes across the entire Highlands and Islands region. It also required the ability to manage & analyse multiple data sets available to me as respite coordinator to then pass on to management teams. I had to let all care workers know what dates and places were available for providing respite in the form of timely and concise daily newsletters - something that I enjoyed producing. I had to manage the needs and desires of care givers and try to align them with the desires of the care homes - sometimes this required working under pressure with requests being submitted with a day's notice. Additionally, I was tasked in analysing the respite process while my predecessor was absent, to attempt to cut down on wasted steps. During my time in the office, I reached out and communicated with other offices across the UK, to identify and understand potential ways to make respite booking more efficient. The role required accurate and efficient recording of all bookings (acceptance of respite, cancellation and change of respite) and also an ability to work closely with my colleagues in the department to prevent waste. I completed six 4/5 hour radio shifts with KOMU, an in-house NPR affiliate at the University of Missouri. Each week I would pitch or be assigned a story to cover based on a geographical beat that I was given; for example, I was assigned the “Columbia and MU Campus” beat. For each story that I would cover, I was required to interview at least two sources; with each source forming the backbone to a separate radio script that would be later read out on air. I was expected to either phone or meet the source in person, record and edit the interview with Adobe Audition and take pictures that will later be used in a web-based article hosted on the KOMU website. I feel that these shifts helped me get used to reporting in an area that I was not familiar with and also helped me understand the various local governmental bodies in the town. During the shifts it was emphasised the importance of a tidy and professional appearance at all times, to be punctual, and additionally, the importance of deadlines to motivate one to finish a story on time. While at the University of Missouri, I worked for globaljournalist.org. I was expected to produce an international affairs talk show every three weeks, which would be published online on YouTube.com and on the website. Working in a group of three or four, I would be assigned a topic to research and though this research, I would be expected to find, interview and select guests to appear on the show via Skype or phone call, that would best offer their expertise on the issue. For each show, my group would rotate roles including being the lead researcher in a document to be given to the anchor of the show and the executive producers; selecting “must read articles” to bring the anchor up to speed with the issue, writing questions for each guest based on their strengths/weaknesses on the topic and pitching the preferred guests to the executive team. One of the team members would be expected to write a feature on the topic, covering an angle of the issue that wasn’t touched upon in greater detail. During my time in the module, I produced five video-based shows, ranging from topics such as: the Turkish election and its possible outcomes, the Jason Rezaian case in Iran and Christian persecution in the Middle East. I was expected to understand the nuances of each issue and be able to create an angle for the show when covering the topic. I also produced a feature story on a journalist that was in exile from their home country due to their reporting; on my own, I contacted and interviewed Nazila Fathi, a former Tehran correspondent for the New York Times. I was expected to find my own sources and guests for each show and story, attribute and avoid plagiarism in my articles, follow the AP style guide in my articles, provide content on a strict deadline and meticulously research each issue, providing different angles of the story to create a better understanding of the story. During my time at the University of Missouri, I contributed to the coverage of the Citizen Jane Film Festival, a film festival hosted in Columbia, Missouri that emphasised films that were in part, or wholly produced by female filmmakers. I pitched myself for and reviewed two films at the film festival; A Woman Like Me – a film within a film about a director who struggled with cancer - & Frame by Frame – an opening night documentary about Afghani photo-journalists and their struggle to be recognized during and after the Taliban regime. These reviews were written to a short submission deadline after the screening and they would eventually be published on the Missourian Vox’s website. This experience emphasised the importance of deadlines, being attentive in writing down film details, the ability to describe and articulate one’s thoughts on a film in an objective fashion and to be punctual and professional as a representative of the magazine. I have contributed articles to three issues of the student magazine, The University Paper. I would first apply to write an article to the editor who would advertise what kind of stories they were looking for. With the article in mind, I would then use an appropriate writing style to fit in line with what the editor wanted. Because there isn’t a physical office, it is very important to be able to communicate via the internet effectively and form strong connections with the editor; both of which I seem to excel at. • Jul 2014 - Aug 2014

During the summer holidays of 2014, I secured a placement spanning the length of the Commonwealth Games which were held in Glasgow. I covered both the Swimming and Diving events, quoting athletes before and after their competitions both directly in mixed zones and indirectly, standing behind radio and TV broadcasters. The quotes that I gathered would then be relayed back to the News Service base, where either I or one of my colleagues would post them online for any media outlet to use. I was also tasked with writing daily summaries of the upcoming events and on specific athletes. This placement required strong communication, team working & coordination skills and an ability to learn quickly while working. While interviewing athletes, I had to be timely and accurate with my recording of quotes - I was prevented from recording with an electronic device - and have an additional ability to consistently produce content that consumers would want to use in their articles.
