Working as a teacher aide has provided many excellent opportunities to better myself in an educational capacity. By working alongside classes and groups of students with a wide range of additional learning needs, from those with autism spectrum disorder, down syndrome, and ADHD, to those with additional behavioral or ESOL needs, I encounter opportunities on a daily basis to re-evaluate my teaching and communication abilities. In this role, I am widely regarded as someone who consistently goes above and beyond to assist the students around me and can be relied upon to help those students get the most out of their learning experiences. As part of the Nagano College of Nursing’s requirements for students, an English programme was established with the aim of helping students to go beyond simply meeting test score requirements. Alongside one other English teacher, I provided instruction at the college where my responsibilities included giving lectures in classes of up to 16 students, assessing and providing feedback on student progress, and promoting the aim of the programme. To this end, I introduced in-class, student-led discussion and speech criteria which promoted free-form speaking over scripts and my own aim of building student confidence in their own ability to share ideas on a range of topics.
