Section Engineer overseeing earthworks and drainage in Section 5 Central Reserve, an 8km section of the M62 between J18 and J20 responsible for the following:• Management of the earthworks and drainage sub-contract package.• Producing and monitoring a three weekly earthworks and drainage construction programme.• Six months pre-planning prior to commencement of the central reserve phase to develop the most efficient construction methodology. This included carrying out detailed design reviews and the submission of a number of design change requests, engaging with key members of the supply chain to understand the latest available technologies that could be utilised, and leading ECI style workshops with sub-contractors.• Excavation and removal of over 20,000m3 of topsoil, sand and redundant VRS foundations.• Import and placement of over 20,000m3 of recycled Type 1 material.• Installation of 7.5km of 300mm diameter carrier pipe.• Installation of over 500 outfall connections ready for new slipformed surface water channel and slot drain.• Modification of 80 existing manholes, up to 6m in depth and 2.4m in diameter. Working as part of the earthworks and drainage team, I was responsible for the following:• Installation of 6km of ACO combined kerb drainage, including outfall connections to existing carrier pipe.• Installation of 1km of Gatic slot drain, including outfall connections to existing carrier pipe.• Installation of over 300m of attenuation drainage pipe, up to 900mm in diameter and 6m in depth, along with 10 complex manholes to control the flow of surface water run-off back into the existing network.• The strengthening of 60 manhole covers located in the hard shoulder to facilitate All Lane Running. During my final summer break from University I completed a Highway Engineering Design Placement with CH2M Hill. With a predominantly site-based Contracting background, this placement gave me the opportunity to further develop my skills by working on a different side of the industry, it also gave me further experience to draw upon during my final year of study. Work included: •Area 7 - Batch 5 & 6 Schemes (Highways Agency) - Responsible for the production of detailed design drawings, sections and plans, ensuring that all drawings met the required CAD standards. Updating drawing registers and document control registers for the relevant schemes, and the compilation of TTRO’s. •Area 12 - Pinch Point Schemes (Highways Agency) - I worked as part of the team responsible for the production of the proposed design drawings and communication plans for the Client. Corresponding with relevant stakeholders, and contacting Statutory Undertakers within the scheme areas, identifying which undertakers may be affected by the proposed works. •Hoobrook Link Road (West Midlands Highways Alliance) - Assisted with the collation and production of Statutory Undertakers information, as well as detailed design drawings up to the final stage for drainage layouts, road pavements, road markings, traffic signs and footways. I later worked on a variety of projects both in terms of scale and Client type, allowing me to develop my engineering knowledge whilst also taking more responsibility for the day to day running of projects. Notable projects included:• Salford Royal Hospital (Balfour Beatty) - Works included construction of three internal courtyards with difficult access. Liquid roofing was carried out to waterproof the hospital plant rooms below, and vent houses constructed to allow ventilation of the plant rooms.• Eastside City Park (Wates Construction) - Works included the importing of over 16,000 tonnes of manufactured soils, the planting of over 300 semi-mature trees and 40,000 shrubs as well as over 6,000 square metres of formal turfing and 2,000 square metres of seeding. • Library of Birmingham (Carillion) - Although relatively small in size and value, this was an extremely complex and logistically challenging project. Works included concrete upstands to existing pump chambers, surface water drainage, gas membrane installation, a 200 square metre attenuation tank, 200 square metre reinforced slab including Type 1 build up, end finally 200 square metres of intricate granite paving with stainless steel inlays and custom made stainless steel drainage channel and manhole covers.Throughout, typical duties included;• Organising and supervising works on site.• Producing and implementing Risk Assessments and Method Statements.• Producing programmes and progress reports.• Liaising with and working alongside Principal Contractors.• Liaising closely with Clients, Administrators and Architects.• Creating, implementing and managing QA and permit systems.• Ordering and reconciling materials.• Understanding and adhering to drawings and specifications.• Working closely with commercial departments to ensure projects were delivered on budget.• Implementing environmental plans and targets set out by the company.• Setting up and maintaining compliant welfare facilities. Assistant Site Engineer on the prestigious MediaCity:UK development, whilst studying part-time for a HNC in Civil Engineering Studies. Spending 18 months on this large-scale project provided reinforcement for my theoretical studies as well as giving me the opportunity to develop lasting contacts within the industry. Typical duties included:• Setting out and monitoring of works using total stations and automatic levels.• Supervising works on site including multiple sub-contractors and direct labour.• Liaising closely with Clients’ representatives.• Producing site reports for Senior Engineers and Project Managers.• Checking schedules against drawings and liaising with designers over changes.• Managing QA systems including permits, technical queries and early warnings.• Accurate record keeping and quantifying materials.Works included over 35,000 square metres of high specification granite paving, kerbing and tarmac, over 5,000 square metres of soft landscaped areas, almost 3,000 square metres of natural stone cladding, as well as all associated earthworks, drainage and concrete structures.
