As the Fire Chief of the Welland Fire and Emergency Services, I oversee the daily operations of the department and community risk responsibilities. I am the Community Emergency Management Coordinator, serving a dynamic population of 57,000. WFES is a composite fire department (career and volunteer staff), a unionized work environment (IAFF and United Steel Workers). WFES is divided into three divisions; Suppression (Response/operations), Fire Prevention and Training Divisions. These Divisions employ over 121 diversified staff, working out of five fire stations and operating ten apparatus. The suppression division responds to all types of emergencies, including interior fire operations, Hazardous Materials, medical response (non-transport), and specialized rescue including; water, rope and other technical operations. The Prevention Division is responsible for the inspection of properties & premises, public education, code enforcement and fire/explosion investigations. The Training Division develops and delivers all internal training needs, investing in responders so that they deliver the optimal service when called upon. My daily responsibilities include labour relations, administration, financial oversight, planning, contract administration, purchasing, personnel management, fleet & facilities/equipment maintenance, health and safety, accident & fire scene, liaising with city departments and the many other duties that present themselves. Joining the Fire Service in 1996, I started with the Welland Fire and Emergency Services as a Firefighter in 2002 and continued on to the positions of Acting Captain, Training Officer, Chief Training Officer and Deputy Fire Chief.
