Brad Duncan
Adam was the project lead for a SaaS service between April-October 2020, and I can safely say that within a six-month time span, he demonstrated a high level of engineering excellence. I initially connected with Adam as an end-user of a service he developed. Early on, we discussed the SaaS offering, some of the challenges with scalability and the roadmap for the development of the service. From our discussions, we established a working relationship which led to our time together. Adam demonstrated innovation management, organisational agility and process management to exceptional levels as a project lead. He was meticulous in his planning and execution of objectives for the platform, which directly translated to the platforms high success. I found on multiple occasions when roadblocks were about to be hit, Adam had already anticipated and adjusted the direction to continue the development of the project. Adam's decisions and direction were backed by data, utilising customer feedback, computational metrics, market research and open discussions within the team. One thing that stood out throughout the project was his extraordinary drive for technical learning. He continuously pushed the envelope for both himself and the team in testing and implementing new technologies. I observed Adam's technological development in technologies such as MySQL, Lua, infrastructure and automation. Early on, he established agile as the software development cycle process of choice and embodied the methodologies and principles it aims to achieve. In every meeting, team members were encouraged to participate, leaving them feeling empowered to complete the task at hand. As the pool of IT workers grows, Adam stands out from what is becoming a rarity; someone who possesses and appreciates a high level of technical and interpersonal skills. Any company or client would be more than lucky to work alongside this brilliant engineer.

A Lua/JavaScript based game server during COVID lockdown that averaged over 70 active players concurrently (filling our server slots), directed the overall project and managed a total of 10 voluntary staff/developers. Lua, Python, HTML, CSS, Javascript, SQL, Windows & Linux, DevOps, SaaS service Project Leader Responsibilities: > Directed a voluntary development, DevOps and support team of 10 with regular meetings and training. > Leading development of server content and implementation of player suggested features. > Reviewing and resolving client support tickets. > Network Engineering such as DDoS Mitigation and safeguarding dedicated servers from exploitation. > Funding and accountancy of the project. > Designed advanced modelling system using tools such as Grafana and Kibana for server monitoring and statistic modelling of over 10,000 individual players. Key Experiences: > When faced with a DDoS ransom attack, in which a cybercriminal actively flooded our dedicated server with network traffic causing server downtime and requested a ransom amount, I led my DevOps and staff team to successful mitigation of the attack via a large team effort to develop a script to detect a large amount of network traffic and close the open ports temporarily to counter it. We then proceeded to share our defence system with other server networks so they would not have to face the same issue. Meanwhile having to develop the mitigation script, I directed my staff support team to keep our player base engaged and reassured that our server would be functioning normally as soon as possible. > Directing a voluntary team of support staff, network engineers and developers gave me invaluable management experience. This management experience included encouraging and empowering staff members to excel in their specific departments, organising and directing weekly staff meetings with presentations on how to improve skills individually and as a staff team.
