Alan was invited by 4D LABS at Simon Fraser University to be a mentor and instructor for the ‘sales and marketing’ session of the Technology Start-up Simulator workshop. Alan is a very approachable and supportive mentor whose expertise in strategic business development and knowledge of international markets have inspired all participants. He covered the essentials of marketing and also tailored industry/company specific questions to each group in order to enhance the learning experience of participants. I am glad to have invited Alan and I will definitely invite him again to speak at our future events.

I have known Alan Burgess in a professional capacity for more than 20 years. In my experience he is both knowledgable and capable. He showed remarkable abaility to take NW Mettech through the various stages of its development. His in depth understanding of the technology and markets of plasma spray, both the eqipment and materials was unequaled. On top of all that he is a plain speaking, down to earth executive engineer and I am proud to have worked with him and extend to anyone who may be considering working with him my storngest recommendation. Over this time I have had the opportunity to work with many people outside my traditional engineering field. Operating outside my usual comfort zone, I was able to apply business principles acquired in my previous career to be applied to new companies in new industries with uncanny acceptance. Particularly rewarding has been my work for the Networks of Centres of Excellence as a member of the Private Sector Advisory Board and a mentor in the BCIC New Ventures Competition. I founded Northwest Mettech Corp. to provide PC process simulation software to the steel and aluminum industries. In the early 90’s, I transformed Mettech into an advanced materials and industrial equipment company and focused on the development of a novel plasma spray technology. This technology started as a concept and was commercialized in 1994 and is still in industrial use today. The technology led to advanced coating solutions for many coating industries including: aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, printing, pulp and paper, energy, fuel cell and electronics industries. Exposure to these industries has provided me with an in depth background into many industrial issues and needs. I am the lead inventor or named on numerous patents in the area of plasma torch design, thermal spray coatings, and nanomaterials. A key innovation I championed is the Axial Suspension Plasma Spray technology that is currently being introduced by GE on their commercial jet engines. I have authored numerous papers and have led many collaborative research programs involving leading Canadian Universities and the National Research Council’s Industrial Materials Institute and Institute for Fuel Cell Innovation. I have served on the Board of Directors for Nanotech BC and was Chairman of the Scholarship Committee for the International Thermal Spray Association for eight years. Show less
