Currently I am developing a research project that will further explore my interests in the cellular mechanisms of aging and the regenerative capabilities of stem cells. Planaria, a non-parasitic flatworm, continues to be my model of interest due to their unique regenerative capacity. My work entails a variety of experimental procedures including histological analysis, PCR, qPCR, behavioral/physiological phenotyping, drug efficacy testing, and a variety of other laboratory techniques. I presented our lab's findings on the underlying mechanisms of drug-seeking behavior at the Neuroscience Conference 2014 in Washington D.C.. Show less

My project as a SRF Summer Scholar at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) was focused on the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) through regenerative cell therapy using mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). During my time here, I studied levels of human stem cell engraftment in mouse intestinal tissue using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative PCR. I spent time developing our histological protocol, investigating the levels of apoptosis (the process of programmed cell death) in intestinal epithelial cells. I also performed Western Blots and cytokine arrays to further investigate the effect of this treatment on apoptosis within the gut. I presented the findings from this research at the Rejuvenation Biotechnology Conference of 2014 in Santa Clara, CA. Show less
