As a former colleague at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Cambridge, I would not hesitate in recommending Abid as a valuable asset to any organisation. He is a passionate and enthusiastic scientist with a multi-disciplinary skill set and a natural ability to articulate complex concepts in a clear manner. Abid is highly personable and an excellent team player.

I worked for several years in the same diverse scientific group as Abid, and was constant buoyed by his enthusiasm for his work. Abid is an insightful and intuitive scientist, and an excellent team player with a keen desire and natural ability to share, nurture and lead new talent. He is an articulate problem solver, able to bring in-depth knowledge ranging from organic synthesis to analytical biochemistry and bioprocessing to bear on projects with both a scientific and commercial/practical application. I have no hesitation recommending Abid.

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT: Demonstrated first ever reported volatile organic compound detection system based on liquid crystal electro-optical response. Patent # WO2016128907A1. Liquid Crystal Biosensors, grant number SFRH/BPD/34768/2007. Formulation, development and fabrication of "smart gels" exhibiting tunable opto-electric properties for real-time gas sensing. This lead to a demonstration of the proof-of-concept for an ‘E-nose’ sensor based on ultra-thin film liquid crystal technology. A variety of volatile organic solvents could be distinguished based solely on the liquid crystal response to solvent vapour, in essence, mimicking olfactory biological systems. Other activities within the role included whole, or partial supervision of undergraduate, Master's and PhD students. When invited, acting as the examiner for Master's or PhD thesis defences. Masters Student Supervision of: Íris Batalha: Gum Arabic coated Magnetic Adsorbents for Bioseparations, (FCT-UNL), 2009 Telma Barroso: Preparation of Affinity Membranes using Alternative Solvents, 2008 (FCT-UNL). PhD, Organic Chemistry, Doctoral thesis entitled: "The Synthesis Of Liquid Crystals And Key Intermediates." The project involved the design and chemical synthesis of novel compounds capable of exhibiting liquid crystalline mesophases at room temperature. The 3-year programme employed the full array of classical organic chemistry techniques and methodology including the routine use of high resolution NMR, FTIR, Mass Spectroscopy, Elemental Analysis, Polarising Optical Microscopy and Differencial Scanning Calorimetry. The work generated two full peer-reviewed publications. The project was funded as an SERC/CASE award through Merck (BDH) Ltd. Prof George William Gray (British pioneer in Liquid Crystals) was the Industrial co-supervisor. Show less
