Abi Dhakal is a Senior GIS Specialist with the Alabama Forestry Commission, where he is responsible for conducting all forestry related GIS activities with an opportunity to redesign GIS infrastructure in the state agency’s county offices. Previously, Abi was with the Central Alabama Regional Planning Commission, where he managed GIS/IT infrastructure office wide. While there, he played a leading role in GIS initiatives in the 12 Regional Planning Commissions of Alabama. His experience includes database design, management, administration, data development, system administration and technical consulting. Abi has a Master’s degree in Zoology, Tribhuvan University, Nepal, 1992. He conducted wildlife research in relation to forest conservation and management plans. In 1999, he obtained a Masters in Environmental Analysis and Management, Troy University. His research included utilizing computer models to simulate the movement of nitrates, phosphorous and sediments in the soil. As a research assistant Abi has helped publish a paper on “Simulating the Effectiveness of Vegetative Filter Strips in Reducing Sediment Yield. International Erosion Control Association, February, 2000. Additionally, he has presented “Implementing ArcGIS Geoprocessing Models In Assessing Tornado Damage In Alabama”.
