Duchess Farm is a mixed farm focussing on regenerative agriculture while growing rapeseed, heritage grains and a herd of Herdwick sheep. I set up their newly formed heritage and alternative grains department, whereby I managed: - Grain varieties - Growing methods - Milling - Customer relations and distribution - Product development with chefs and bakers. - Working with 3rd parties of carbon credits, soil testing and monitoring regenerative impact. I also crowdfunded £20k for the installation of grain cleaning equipment and a mill on the farm in mid-2020. On top of farming duties I engage a lot in outreach and public engagement on the topics of: - Heritage and alternative grains - First-generation farmers and access to land - Women in farming Show less

    • Carbon13 Cohort 2 Founder
      • Sep 2021 - Feb 2022

I was a founder on Carbon13’s Venture Builder for the climate crisis. During this eight month programme, a cohort of 50 founders form co-founding teams to build a high growth venture with the potential to reduce CO2e emissions by 10 million tonnes. Based in the Cambridge ecosystem of academia, entrepreneurship, and research, Carbon13 selects founders from diverse backgrounds with deep technical expertise or an impressive track record in entrepreneurship or in one of our target sectors. Founders join as individuals without a startup or even an idea, and Carbon13 supports them to build a dream team, explore the most meaningful opportunities, and transition technical ideas into a commercial success. At the four month stage, successful teams receive an investment of £75,000. Show less

I worked as a consultant for PGD during their growth phase. My main role was working on farm-chef relations and managing their 10 acre market garden at Duchess Farms site in Hertfordshire. Here I spent much of my time consulting on topics such as plant varieties, farm-restaurant connections and growing methods. I worked as a consultant for PGD during their growth phase. To learn properly how to become a farmer in the most sustainable way, I spent time at the world renowned Stone Barns and Blue Hill helping the farming team. Here I learnt about everything from selecting plant varieties and growing restaurant grade vegetables, to cooking with 'wastes' and composting. It enabled me to understand how a farm can be sustainable and successful. In return I helped them with their heritage barley trials, and spent one day a week in the bakery sharing my knowledge of wheat and learning their process of wheat breeding, milling and baking. My research was split between King's College London and Maastricht University, where my supervisors we Lucy Di Silvio and Mark Post. This project was funded by the non-profit organisation New Harvest, and I was their first ever funded research student. I proposed and wrote my own topic, and worked on the areas of: - Research title: 'Creation of In-Vitro Thick bovine 3D Perfused Skeletal Muscle Tissue for the Production of Cultured Meat'. - Cell culture and analysis, with a focus on skeletal muscle cell proliferation and differentiation. - A variety of natural scaffold for cell growth, including novel ideas such as using plant roots to mimic vascular systems. - Bioreactor synthesis, including 3D printing and engineering design. I also actively participated in public engagement programmes including talks, workshops, exhibitions and seminars, including: -- Bite to the Future filming -- 'Our future on a plate' exhibition at Somerset House with photographer Joe Sarah -- Creative Mornings -- Latitude, Green Man, Secret Garden Party and Shambala Festivals -- Farmarama Radio -- Science Gallery London Show less

After completing my masters I continues to work on my final year cellular agriculture project over the summer. Here I: - Assisted in the final stages of bioscaffold characterisation ready for patenting. - Researched into finding innovative ways to induce porosity and hydrophillicity in polymers through both laboratory experimentation and theoretical research. - Engaged in the characterisation of rheometry, porosity, stiffness and structure using methods including microscopy, SEM, filtration, shear stress rheometry, gas and liquid permeation. - Introduced and partook in cell culture methods and techniques. - Evaluated findings using visual and statistical analysis. - After conducting a final MEng project in cultured meat continued to work on theoretical bioreactor and process design including; thermodynamics, fluid flow (microfluidics), mass and energy balancing.
