I had the pleasure of supervising Abby Kuranz while working for my previous employer, Sound Salmon Solutions. Abby Kuranz was one of over twenty environmental educators I had supervised as Education Program Manager of that non-profit organization. Within all of those educators, Abby stood out as an exceptionally mature and capable individual during the two years when we worked together. While her undergraduate degree was in environmental science, Abby came to Sound Salmon with a keen interest and background in public outreach and effective teaching methods. She was voluntarily involved in a K-12 science outreach program while at University of Wisconsin Madison where she gained valuable experience in inquiry- and project-based teaching. Abby built upon these skills while at Sound Salmon; she worked with several hundred students, ranging from 5th grade to community college, to facilitate student-driven environmental research and outreach projects related to water conservation. Her scientific acumen allowed Abby to successfully mentor students as they developed and implement their research. When we worked together, Abby showed much initiative to use her natural teaching skills, such as questioning, empathy and flexibly, and seek out experiences and training to augment her talents as an effective environmental educator. Abby’s ability to organize and express ideas clearly, in both writing and orally, is suburb. She was able to build rapport and successful educate a diversity of audiences about a wide range of water conservation issues. She developed and implemented the Puget Sound – I Love You (P.S. – I Love You) outreach program during her employment at Sound Salmon, including writing a successful grant proposal to secure competitive funding from a private foundation from which our organization had not previously received an award. Abby demonstrated her intellectual independence and analytical skills while seeking better evaluation methods for stewardship-related education and outreach programs. Without much guidance or direction, she contacted professionals and sought publications to increase her knowledge. Each study, conversation and survey she uncovered in her research was thoughtfully evaluated by Abby herself, and the organization’s program evaluation improved tremendously from Abby’s efforts to synthesize what she learned from her independent research on program evaluation. Abby is a talented educator and environmental scientist with the attitude and proficiencies to attain great achievements. Abby particularly thrives in a trans-disciplinary setting; she understands the interface between policy and science and truly values public input into environmental issues. She is motivated and capable leader with wonderful combination of passion, intelligence and drive. I strongly recommend her as a valuable asset to any social science or environmental program.

As an Outreach and Program Associate with GRID Alternatives, Abby was a quick learner and go-getter and produced great results, including successful grants and outreach and educational materials. She is detail-oriented, dedicated, and thoughtful with exceptional abilities to think critically and systematically about complex issues. Abby also has strong communication and interpersonal skills, which enabled her to work well and connect with a diverse group of people, including volunteers, homeowners, and co-workers. I am very confident that she will succeed in anything she takes on and I do not hesitate to give her a very strong recommendation.
