For the past two months, I have had the opportunity to work for Aina Ola, Inc. on the Big Island of Hawaii, building beautiful custom homes. With Aina Ola, I worked on three different homes in various stages of the construction process, from framing to finish. Working both in the field and the office, I learned a multitude of different skills and improved upon knowledge I already possessed. In the field I worked hands-on with the framing crew, hanging all hurricane ties and joist hangers, and installed rafters, tongue and groove, and plywood sheathing on the roof. I worked closely with the Project Manager on each home, learning and assisting with their daily tasks, and closely observing different approaches for the successful build-out of a home. My day- to- day responsibilities included quality control, assessing schedule status and recognizing potential delays, reviewing budgets, cost tracking, and cost coding, reviewing shop drawings (doors, windows, trusses, wall panels) and working with subcontractors in the field to clarify questions, discuss solutions and strategize to ensure maximum efficiency.

Summer Intern
-
May 2015 - Aug 2015
This summer, I worked as an Intern for Hensel Phelps Construction Company at Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona. I worked both in the office doing administrative tasks, and in the field assisting the superintendent. In the office, I completed submittals and RFIs, along with production tracking. In the field, I took care of quality control, safety audits, photo documentation, helped to coordinate subcontractor deliveries, and conducted Monday morning Tool Box Talks. I had the opportunity to attend the Field Engineer Boot Camp where I had the experience of laying out a traverse, secondary, and working controls. From that information, my team and I calculated azimuths and came up with site coordinates from the real world coordinates to enable the team to pour two concrete footings in the correct location. We completed the assignment with only a small error of 1/8".

Summer Intern

May 2014 - Aug 2014
While working at Dorn Homes, I helped the company to transition from their current working software to the new one, Marks Systems. This took attention to close detail, consulting with other staff members, and general knowledge of the home building process. I created sample boards of all materials being used in the model homes and assisted with other small tasks. Throughout the duration of the internship I also had the opportunity to shadow superintendents at some of the subdivisions and a realtor for Dorn Homes.
