Stranger’s Guide brings international locations into new focus, commissioning stories from local writers and photographers to build authentic portraits of a place. We design our award-winning print guides, newsletters, carefully selected products and partnerships to combat stereotypes while expanding global citizenship.Rather than parachute in foreign writers, our quarterly guides feature original works from local voices. These stories portray unique facets of each place, from the complex and controversial to the intimate and beautiful, together building a contemporary awareness of the location and its culture. Our work has been featured in the Best American Travel Writing collection and garnered a National Magazine Award nomination for General Excellence. Our volumes have featured world-renowned writers, including Cervantes Prize winner Elena Poniatowska, National Book Award winner Colum McCann and Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka. Alongside such celebrated writers, you’ll also find new and up-and-coming voices from locations around the world.

In the nine months I served as acting publisher of the Texas Observer, I worked to put this Texas institution onto firmer financial footing. I oversaw the transition to a new fulfillment house, organized several events including our annual gala, and helped secure over $1.3 million in new grant dollars. During this time, we launched a major direct mail campaign and a number of online fundraising campaigns to build a stronger development infrastructure. I remain the board chair for the Texas Democracy Foundation, which owns the Observer and once we were on more solid ground, I facilitated the hiring of our excellent permanent publisher.

During this period, I wrote several long form pieces for The American Prospect, The National Journal and the Texas Observer on both political and cultural issues including elections administration, the fights progressive cities wage in conservative states and the depictions of kids' sports in film. I covered state-level politics and policies around the country. During the 2012 election, I focused on voting rights and access in different states, as well as the efforts of the King Street Patriots. I was especially interested in the Tea Party and the movement's relationship to more traditional conservatism. I also covered education and the industries that surround it, as well gay marriage, reproductive rights and labor issues. I blogged at least several times a week, as well as writing longer features for the magazine and website. Check out my work here: www.prospect.org/voices/abby-rapoport

I covered education and politics for the Texas Observer, reporting on the rise of the Tea Party throughout the state and the 2011 legislative session in which lawmakers faced a $27 billion budget shortfall and relied heavily on cuts to education to make up the difference. I wrote many features, among them: a story on the efforts to privatize public education and several stories on Rick Perry's campaign, including a profile on his campaign manager and a investigation into more recent pay-to-play deals in the governor's office.
