In October 2005, Dr Taheri became a PhD candidate at Yokohama National University. This was a special English course. He awarded a scholarship from Japan government (Monbukagakusho scholarship) and earned a PhD in geotechnical engineering in 2008. For his PhD research, he had an opportunity to work in several advanced geotechnical laboratories and research centres in Japan belonging to Yokohama National University, OYO Corporation, Tokyo Construction Co. and Kiso-Jiban Consultant Ltd.
