HFLI has built a national network of small, urban college- and career-prep high schools focused on project-based learning, deep partnerships in the community, and design thinking for creativity and innovation. As part of that effort, we have developed an innovative 6-12 curriculum that integrates design thinking into all core subjects, and extensive professional development and coaching for teachers and instructional leadership at our schools as they implement the curriculum. University Prep is part of a national network of Big Picture schools. BP schools design and facilitate learning one student at a time. Starting in 9th grade, all students find meaningful internships in areas of their interest, and work with their advisors to design individualized projects and, through those projects, to learn communication skills, quantitative reasoning, empirical reasoning, and social sciences and community engagement.
