Responsible for designing a new replaceable sprocket nose for a chainsaw bar. This required studying existing designs and optimizing the design using FEA tools, prototypes and extensive lab and field testing. The end result is a product that lasts longer than the current design and is patent protected to prevent third-party copies. Several new test fixtures were needed to test the nose for durability, strength, corrosion resistance and paint durability. Analyzing the data with software to see patterns and for statistical significance was a major part of this project. Another duty was to investigate field returned product. Sometimes this required contacting the end-user to determine the use case, duplicating the failure mode in the lab and then recommending a solution to production to prevent this failure mode from occurring again. Designed plastic injection-molded, thermoformed and sheet metal parts to meet the requirements of an ink delivery system for workstation inkjet printers. Included testing of parts and sub-systems for reliability, accelerated life, thermal, humidity, vibrations and shock. Used PTC Creo-Elements as the CAD system and built-in FEA modules. Designed customer-facing parts and participated in usability tests to confirm design direction. Worked closely with internal and external customers in purchasing, manufacturing, regulatory and traveled to SE Asia for prototype build support. Designed test fixtures to qualify parts and production tooling to fixture parts during assembly. Show less

    • Research Engineer
      • Jun 2009 - Mar 2012

Visited twenty-three countries around the world to gain an understanding of how other cultures and societies have solved their problems. Inspired to incorporate some of the ideas and approaches into engineering solutions that do not rely on fossil fuels. Most of the research was conducted in South Africa that included solar water heaters, sustainable farming and wind turbine farms. Eco-tourism was investigated in Mozambique to study how to minimize the impact on the indigenous population. Provided design feedback to designers regarding manufacture-ability, cost and usability. Translated engineering drawings and specifications to requests for bids from mostly SE Asian vendors. Visited responding vendors and selected partner based on negotiated price, terms, qualifications and metrology. Competent with the Change Order/Request process: generation; feasibility and implementation - from internal and external sources. Once launched, the production data was reviewed using standard SPC parameters to ensure capability. Show less

    • Engineering Manager/Program Manager
      • Dec 2003 - Sep 2007

Managed a cross-functional team in Singapore for a new product line. Required traveling to SE Asia to meet with vendors/partners and to live in Singapore to build and train a team who had no previous printer experience. Established a print QA department, qualified vendors, approved tools, reviewed prototype builds and was the liaison between design and manufacturing in Asia and management in the United States. Overcame challenges between the different cultures and directed team by earning respect without direct reports. Studied the market and steered product to meet market needs. Required dealing with all aspects of the product and their respective departments: safety, shipping/customs, legal, marketing, distribution, sales and end-users. Required discussing and gaining consensus on technical subjects with non-technical departments. Show less

    • Mechanical Design Engineer
      • Jun 2001 - Dec 2003

Designed a major sub-system for a solid-ink printer. Responsible for all aspects including solid-modeling, costing, testing, sourcing and production. The sub-system included metals, plastics, electronic circuit board and sintered metal parts. Utilized tools, such as Design of Experiments, HALT/HASS (accelerated testing), FMEA (failure modes and effects analysis), Shainin techniques and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) to optimize the module for high-volume manufacturing.

    • Mechanical Design Engineer
      • Jun 1997 - Jun 2001

Project engineer for a new product line of mobile forestry equipment – Harvesters and Forwarders. Collaborated with other departments to establish parameters of the project regarding market research, performance, cost accounting, design, manufacture-ability, and service-ability. Implemented solid-modeling, motion studies, testing, FEA, and material analysis to ensure a sound product. Designed the major systems, including electrical, powertrain, structural, and a new hydraulic system not previously existing in the industry. Coordinated cost-cutting measures and streamlining procedures before beginning production. Show less
