    • Summer Placement - Tunneling Team
      • Jun 2022 - Sep 2022

Having worked on the Silvertown tunnel Project the year before, I was invited back to carry out a Mechanical Engineering Summer Placement opportunity with the Tunnels Team at Silvertown. The large scale project requires the creation of two tunnels, both measuring 12m in diameter and crossing underneath the river Thames. In order to do so, Riverlinx CJV employed the use of the largest Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in the UK. Being a Mechanical Engineer on the Tunnels team during the period of TBM installation and assembly, I was involved in the creation of utilities diversion plans for the TBM. With my extensive knowledge and skill in AutoCAD, a lot of which was transferrable to AutoCAD Civil 3D, I was able to create detailed and accurate plans for the diversion of the TBM utilities around the tunnel. This was done to create clearance for the permanent works which would happen as the TBM progressed through the tunnel, such as the creation of cross passages. Alongside this, I also created the schematics for all the utilities to demonstrate placements of valves, sprinklers, pressure relief valves, and spacing between isolation valves within the tunnel. Furthermore, I created assembly plans to construct a gantry crane grab and to grease the seal ring around the TBM. Alongside this, I also obtained my CSCS accreditation allowing me to access most areas of construction sites. Throughout this placement, I have been able to develop my CAD skills further by utilising a new-to-me software package. I was able to do so thanks to teaching and skills which were tranferrable. I was also able to create effectvely assembly plans which highlight how to carryout operations, the personnel required, and all the Hazards, Risks, and health & safety protocols that need to be pointed out and followed. Furthermore, I now have a better understanding of construction sites, their layouts, and the standard of safety which must be maintained to ensure an environmentally and socially safe place. BAM Nuttal Ltd is one of 3 companies who form the Riverlinx Coporate Joint Venture (CJV) with the aim of overseeing the development and construction of the Silvertown tunnel project connecting North Greenwich and Silvertown. As a Student Intern, I began working as a Document Controller. This involved collating, preparing, and submitting design packages and forms from the CJV to ensure that the client was informed of any design changes/submissions for the project. From this experience, I was introduced to the Projectwise data base in which documents could be shared via cloud services. I also developed my skills in Excel documentation and preparation. I then began work for the Health and Safety department of Riverlinx CJV. In this department, I was tasked with creating profiles for employees who worked on the construction site. These profiles were generated on MSite so that electronic turnstiles could be implemented in all Silvertown tunnel related areas. From this, I was able to develop an understanding of the adminstrative and security aspects involved in the overseeing of those on a construction project. I was also given access to the Silvertown site itself, further expanding my knowledge on Tunnel boaring. Finally, I worked on the Building Information Modelling (BIM) team, where I was introduced to Autocad Civil 3D and Revit. Whilst working in this department, I created volumes on a Revit model to highlight specific zones, sections, and chainages. I also created an Axis document which highlighted the specific roads within the Silvertown Tunnel project on an Autocad model. I was also tasked with editing the permanent car park on an Autodesk DWG file so that more parking spaces could be permitted, which was then submitted to the client after internal inspections. Working with the BIM team introduced me to the various Autodesk softwares, and allowed me to develop transferrable editing and drawing skills in Autocad. Show less

Worked alongside Mechanical Engineering from the MEP Estimation Department, and was given insight into their work on their various projects. I was able to shadow the Head of the MEP Estimation Department, and also provide help to the other Engineers in the department. I developed my skills in Microsoft Excel and also Microsoft Powerpoint by creating and preparing documents and presentations which were to be shown to the Senior Management of the Al Futtaim Engineering division.
