In my time with Breffni air as an electrical supervisor I was over seeing electrical containment installation on a large data centre in Dublin. In my role my responsibilities were to ensure that electrical install is carried out as efficiently and safely as possible. To accomplish this, I carried out many tasks on site including estimating the time and materials needed to complete the job in the time frame requested from the main contractor. I delegated the right men to the right job that suits their qualifications and abilities to ensure I am getting the best output of the operatives. In this role as a supervisor, it is very important that I had a good knowledge of drawings and was able to give assistance or guidance when necessary. It was vital that I ensured all workers on site had the correct training to meet the safety standards and that I stayed on top of all relevant paperwork including SPAs Hot Works permits, GA1, GA2s etc. on this site the main contractor implemented a Don’t Walk By Qr code which I ensured the operatives filled out on a weekly basis. This allowed the main contractor to stay on top of all issues that operatives are having on site were documented and actions were put in place to amend these issues. I attended daily meetings on site to co-ordinate with other trades to make sure a clear plan is put in place for the following day to ensure a high level of productivity was achieved. These meetings include a morning whiteboard briefing, a DABS meeting midday and a 12 week look ahead to ensure all dates required are going to be achievable. I thoroughly enjoyed the responsibility as an electrical supervisor and felt I gained vital experience in this role. It also has made me hungry to keep progressing in my career and gaining knowledge and experience to become better and better every day. Show less

In my employment with KN Circet I worked on the nationwide smart meter project working on behalf of the ESB. I took the opportunity to work on this project as I wanted to challenge myself to do something that I hadn’t done before in my career and I’m happy that I decided to do this as I’ve learned some really useful skills that can only help me going forward in my career. The main skills you need in this job is organisation and self-initiative. I had to log onto my iPad every evening where I downloaded a list of jobs I had to visit the next day, some of these jobs have a specific time that the customers have requested so it is vital that I spend some time in the evening planning out my day to make sure I was going about my day in the most efficient manner. While on site we had to follow a strict procedure that has been set out by the ESB. Each step of the job has to be logged onto the iPad and pictures taken to make sure that every step is followed as to ESB requirements. Before the start of every job, I performed a voltage test and also an earth loop impedance test to make sure all results were within the values set out by the ESB to allow us to proceed with the installation. If we could proceed, we then had to complete the installation using arc flash equipment as there is a risk of arc flashes because some of the equipment is corroded from weather conditions over the years. When finished the install we then had to use a torque screwdriver to make sure all connections were tight and also perform a pull test on all cables just to be 100 percent sure. I then repeat all the electrical tests logging the results in the iPad before sealing up all equipment. We performed a visual audit ourselves before sending the job into auditors who look over all the pictures and values that we had logged. Once the auditors pass the job, we move onto the next one and repeat the process. Show less

During my second spell with STS I was based on a multimillion data centre in Tyrrells town Dublin. My works consisted of a range of tasks on the roof. I was looking after a team of two electricians two apprentices and two general operatives as a charge hand which was a great learning curve in my career, something I hadn’t done before, it’s something I really enjoyed and felt really comfortable doing. The roof consisted of nine phases in each phase there are twelve AC units. My duties ranged from installing the containment such as tray and conduit to wiring the units using SWA cable followed by glanding and terminating the lights and power supplies for each unit, each unit had its own distribution board which we had to get in order, finally we test and commission the units to get them ready for handover. I enjoyed this work as I got a good mix off tasks and I was trusted to get everything over the line, on time for each phase with little or no snags. Show less

While working for Kirby electrical I was situated on the Microsoft data centres DUB09 and DUB10 in Grange Castle Dublin. When I started with Kirby’s I was just out of phase six in my apprenticeship. I had never been part of a testing crew so I asked could I be put with the testers so I could gain experience in this sector of the trade. I am great full for the opportunity to do this as I have learned so much in this space of time. We were testing all final circuits from all the lighting boards, all the UPS panels and all other general service panels in both buildings. These tests consisted of continuity test, insulation resistance, earth loop and trip test of all RCDs plus more tests. In this time, I have gained a good knowledge in the operation of the megger tester and another skill I have upskilled in is the paperwork side of things. When we recorded all our values, we had to submit test sheets on the tablet using excel and send them through to the engineer. I was testing for six months before I went back on my tools for the last two months of my time with Kirby’s in these two months, I was working on a variety of tasks from installing busbar to working on the panels. During my time with DERG I worked on many different sites these included Intel Fab 10 and Fab 24, Facebook Clonee, The curragh racecourse and UCD. I spent nearly six months in intel on the night shift working with the tool install crew subbed into mercury. At the start of my time in intel I found it very frustrating as I was mainly just helping the sparks and I felt I could offer a lot more to the job than this. It all changed when I went up to the foreman and told him that I felt I had a lot more to offer , he was delighted to hear this and put me working on my own jobs I felt I excelled loads by being giving my own responsibilities and I was looking after full tool installs from start to finish on my own as a third year. I was completing jobs to a high standard and getting them over the line on time when the pressure was on. In completing these jobs, I had to install trunking, tray and conduits along with bonding all equipment and finally pulling the vendor cables to the tools. Another skill I obtained from working in intel was that I have a good understanding of the use of the BIM and I became fairly handy at operating the system. After I left intel, I spent the next five months of my time with DERG on the Facebook site the curragh and UCD before going into phase six. Show less

During my time with STS I worked on two different jobs both were data centres for amazon one being in Tallaght and the other being in Blancherstown. I completed various jobs in the six months with STS. These jobs varied from putting up trunking, tray and basket to putting up big buss duct around the data centres. I was also let put away cables in the A.T.S. units and also the tap off boxes on the buss ducts, this was a challenge I loved as it’s something I had not done before, the cables were big five core cables and where tricky enough to get into a nice shape but I relished the challenge and completed the job to a good high standard. Apprentice Electrician

I started with JMC as a labourer at first my intentions where to get a feel for the trade and see if that was a trade I would like to pursue. After a few months I realized I really enjoyed the work and had a great passion and ability for this kind of work so I got the ball rolling on my apprenticeship registration and now I am a registered third year apprentice. My duties changed from day to day with JMC for example one day I could be sweeping the floor the next day I could be fitting out sockets or hanging lights. But it really doesn’t make a difference whatever task I was given I tried my 100 percent best at it and if I didn’t fully understand I would ask my supervisor to show me and learn from him. During my 2 and a half years at JMC I feel I learned a lot because we did work across the board, I got the chance to experience every side of things from containment to wiring to fitting and I feel this will benefit me greatly in the future.
