Aaron was one of our university’s guest speakers and he presented Pathway to the Bar which was a great insight for law students. We connected after the event and I recently had the opportunity to have a one-on-one pupillage mock interview with him and he was very professional, approachable and helpful. The interview mirrored the real interview where he prepared a mock case for me to work on and he was very proficient in the way he handled the whole scenario. He gave a very detailed feedback after the interview and answered all my questions and concerns. He is genuinely a helpful, professional and capable barrister that any aspiring barrister should connect with.

Delivered a 100% success rate for clients: took instructions in conference, drafted correspondence, researched and prepared appeal submissions and appeared at hearings. Liaised with clients with poor English via interpreters: maintained calm during stressful experiences for clients, many of whose benefit revocations had caused extreme financial difficulties. The entire week was spent in court observing trials and discussing the facts and progress of cases. This mini pupillage was an excellent opportunity to observe an area of the bar that regularly calls upon the advocacy skills of counsel as well as the chance to contrast different styles of advocacy and their effectiveness. Barristers from 187 Fleet Street were very helpful and made it possible to learn a lot about their individual approaches towards their legal arguments, which in turn provided a greater understanding of how to influence judges and juries. It was also interesting to observe the respective roles of witnesses and defendants, and in particular the jury's reception of evidence submitted in cross examination. Discussions were often had with counsel about this, and the importance of non-verbal communication in court which can greatly influence a verdict. During this mini pupillage it was evident to see the effect that limited CPS resources had on the strength of prosecution. It was enthralling to witness the significant role prosecuting counsel play in reacting pragmatically to ever changing events whilst managing the expectations of claimants, judges and indeed to the CPS. This experience with 187 Fleet Street served as a great reference point with which the criminal bar can be compared and contrasted with other work experience undertaken, for example other mini pupillages at the Chancery or Commercial bar.
