      The research conducted on behalf of the Somerset Regional Tourism Association Inc (SRTAI) to identify the attitudes of local businesses regarding tourism development and evolve into "Sustainable Somerset" as a region. Sustainable development is aimed at minimizing the impact of growth on the local culture and environment whilst creating economic opportunities for the current and future communities of the region. The research examines the attitudes of local businesses towards sustainable tourism development; the outcome of this research will serve to weigh the benefits of tourism against any environmental or cultural impacts, while considering interests of local businesses. To get a better understanding of the local businesses' from the dimensions of awareness, attitude and intention of participation in the region's sustainable community based tourism development initiative, a survey was conducted of the businesses in varying levels of dependencies to tourism industry ­ High, Moderate, Low, and Independent. The data thus collected was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively in context to the three factors of awareness, attitude and intention of participation showing a positive result among the four groups collectively and individually, with an exception in intention of participation for low dependency and independent groups, where a low intention is a possibility. Attitudes of the business community irrespective of their dependencies to tourism are positive, with a reasonably good understanding of sustainable community based tourism development and a high level of intention in participation towards planning and development process.
