Legal Intern- Fixed Term Contract
-
Jun 2021 - Sep 2021
• Have accepted a full-time role with Magrath Sheldrick LLP in their UK immigration department that is due to start on 1st June 2021 after successfully passing the interview stage that took place virtually on 19th May 2021• Gained exposure to the compliance measures the firm and its client take to meet the GDPR rules• Data entry via gov.uk for skilled worker visas, ICT visas for both in-country and out-of-country applicants• Helped to draft skilled worker applications for corporate clients which was a unique experience to private clients as dealt with the HR department more than the applicant• Created and drafted applications using the new EU system via the app and notified the client to review the draft before submission• Attended training for GDPR and compliance which helped me to understand how the firm operates, especially with new GDPR and compliance regulations in place. Applying this in practice enabled me to understand the importance of the training sessions for a legal entity especially considering the current importance of GDPR and complying with such regulations• Drafted a client engagement letter for an ancestry application which was interesting as I was asked to split the fees and indicate what the fees related to weren’t supervised comments• Used new software namely Global Reach which enables corporate clients to stay on top of their compliance requirements which is useful when unexpected audits happen- the system also enables HRfrom these firms to stay informed on the progress of the cases and add documents as they come in for the relevant employees • Conversant with using precision pay which is the software used to submit applications online• Legal research completed for client wishing to bring someone under visitor visa• Liaised with clients on draft applications and then made necessary changes following their responses in a timely fashion

• Obtaining client instructions on objectives and timescales with a view to drafting a purchase agreement and negotiating terms with the other party to ensure the client’s rights were protected• Completed an immigration application for a self-employed client which focused on the client’s business, the years it has been active for, the dividends received, who the shareholders were and the purpose of the company. Understanding the client’s business was integral to the success of their immigration application.• An increase in family law and immigration cases as a result of the pandemic caused an increase in the use of legal software namely, LEAP, to deal with the administrative tasks better which allowed them more time to deal with the complexities of the client’s case which is where the bulk of legal expertise is needed• The firm also sent out more progress emails to clients in order to keep them at ease which proved to be effective as clients remained calm and trusted the solicitors to deal with their case
