I was project engineer for a 130 MW wind farm project in one of Chile´s most privileged locations. I managed the communications with engineering, wind energy and electrical line consulting firms, and was in charge of all wind related aspects of the development (7 mast measurement campaigns, production studies, layout optimization), reporting directly to the General Manager of the company. In addition my work entailed the identification of wind farm and hydroelectric development opportunities within the company’s 2.7 million acres of forestry assets. I identified and assessed 27 potential wind farm sites, and worked with a consultant engineer on the preliminary feasibility studies and the assessment of 12 hydroelectric projects ranging from 1 to 60 MW. Another aspect of my work involved managing the interaction with the firm that conducts the process of obtaining an easement strip for a 33 km transmission line project that is part of a US$2.1 billion wood pulp facility project. Cristalerías Toro SpA is a glass products manufacturing company that is also active in the wind energy sector. In 2009 the company installed the third existing wind farm in Chile (Cristoro Lebu), initially a five turbine 3.5 MW project, with two 1.5 MW turbines added in 2011. As chief engineer I worked on-site managing the operation and maintenance of the wind farm and leading a team of four technicians. My work included defining the preventive maintenance protocols and schedules, managing corrective maintenance activities, and producing reports for authorities. I also managed related projects, including the environmental permitting and engineering of an electrical substation project and the initial stages of an expansion project completed in 2014. My work also involved leading the daily operation of the facilities with responsibilities over a housekeeping staff of two, three guards and two night watchmen. In 2011 I traveled to China, Denmark and Spain to visit wind farms and facilities from the turbine manufacturers HeWind, Envision and Vestas, and present the Cristoro Lebu Wind Farm project to the president of HeWind. Pre-graduate thesis and further work as Project Engineer on the design and implementation of a battery energy storage system inverter, in a full practical isolated micro-grid. My pre-graduate thesis (http://goo.gl/oB1Eqp) was inserted as an original and essential part of a renewable energies microgrid project from the Energy Center of the University of Chile that gained funding from a mining company. The project granted continuous electricity supply to Huatacondo, a small, isolated, oasis village community in the Atacama Desert. Previous to our work the village had just a few hours per day of electricity supplied by a diesel generator. The project installed solar panels and a wind turbine. My work consisted in the development of a power inverter that allows the integration of these different energy sources. It was awarded the 2011 Academic Excellence Prize by the Transmission Studies Network Initiative from Transelec S.A.. The design was published at the "Anales del Instituto de Ingenieros de Chile" journal (http://goo.gl/wAk3qw; pp. 89-98) and the control system was published and presented at the IECON 2012 (http://goo.gl/9tsUxh). The inverter remains fully operational (as of 2015). Show less
