Bio
David Schairer
James worked on the Concentric team for only 5 years, but his accomplishments make it seem like twice as long. He handled every thorny problem we threw at him, including taking on the very complex, proprietary distributed spam filtering engine where he had to teach himself machine learning to tackle it. James is extremely good at creative solutions to difficult software engineering and algorithmics problems as well as squeezing performance out of both permanent and ad hoc solutions -- and knowing when to choose between them. I wish I could pry him out of Craigslist for every opportunity I see for him.
Michael Andersen
James is simply brilliant. He's the kind of engineer who, working independently, can come up with insights about PHP that warrant the attention of Rasmus Lerdorf. His understanding of how web servers work and how operating systems and programming languages work on a very low level make James an invaluable member of any engineering team, and very difficult to replace. James recently left my company to pursue a new opportunity, and we are already missing his expertise, as well as his humor and his astounding ability to gather people from multiple departments together for lunch every Friday.
