Legal Intern at Chicago Commission on Human Relations
-
Haz 2019 - Ağu 2019
From early June to late August, I interned at the Chicago Commission on Human Relations (CCHR) under the supervision of the First Deputy Commissioner, Kenneth Gunn. There are two sides to what the CCHR does. One side focuses on investigating discrimination complaints when the Chicago Human Rights Ordinance and the Chicago Fair Housing Ordinance have been violated. The other side of the office is the Inter-Group Relations (IGR) division. Here, this side focuses on providing educational workshops in the community in regards to bullying, hate crimes, prejudice reduction, compliance, and disability. Furthermore, this side focuses on community mediation, outreach, and assisting hate crime victims. During this summer, I had the opportunity to learn from both sides of the CCHR. Some of the taskes included...- Worked directly with communities by canvassing neighborhoods in Chicago to spread awareness of our agency. - Assisted victims of hate crimes and learned about the criminal court process. - Analyzed and researched proposed legislation to present to my supervisor. - Assisted in filing supplemental information for U Visa Form I-918 for applicant.

I work with County's Clerk office with a newly program known as the Kalamazoo County ID, which will offer county residents a photo identification card. Since the Kalamazoo County ID is a brand new program, which was approved by the Board of Comissioners in July of 2017, I have been primarily working with Excel and Microsoft Word. • Searched for businesses, organizations, and agencies to insert data onto a excel sheet. • Created mail labels to send letters to businesses, agencies, and organizations regarding the program. • Reviewed applicant's documents to verify that they qualified for a County ID through a points system. • Input applicant's information to the system database to grant a Kalamazoo County ID.
