  SADL is een samenwerkingsverband tussen meerdere onderzoeksgroepen uit het Departement Aard –en Omgevingswetenschappen. Via SADL beschikken de betrokken onderzoeksgroepen over een performant kanaal om onderzoeksexpertise en- resultaten uit te dragen naar en te toetsen in de maatschappij.Het gaat hierbij in de eerste plaats over de Geografische Informatie Wetenschap en- Technologie en hun toepassingen in het fysisch landbeheer en de socio-economische omgeving. Dit gebeurt via onderzoek voor en wetenschappelijke dienstverlening aan overheden en industrie en via het opzetten van post –en para-academische vormingsprogramma’s.Dit geheel wordt aangevuld met deelname aan meer fundamentele onderzoeksprogramma’s en academische opleidingen waardoor een naadloze overgang mogelijk wordt tussen theorie en toepassing.   Het kenniscentrum wil zich met haar onderzoek richten op het grote aantal groene ruimtes dat het midden houdt tussen tuin en landschap, stad en groen, natuur en cultuur en publiek en privaat. Het gaat om ruimtes die vaak heel kleinschalig zijn, op het eerste zicht onbeduidend, en erg versnipperd aanwezig in het stadsbeeld. De onderzoekers gaan na hoe deze ruimtes een meer strategische functie kunnen opnemen in een meer duurzame samenleving in zowel ecologische, sociale, culturele en/of economische zin. Daarnaast gaan de onderzoekers van het kenniscentrum na hoe ook de investeringsdynamieken achter deze (semi-)private tuin- en stadslandschappen, gestuurd kunnen worden in de richting van duurzame, collectieve doelstellingen.   PhD research: The garden complex in Flanders The Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (ILVO) performs multidisciplinary, innovative and independent research aimed at economically, ecologically and socially sustainable agriculture and fisheries. The Social Sciences Unit focuses on the sustainable development of the agricultural industry as well as rural areas in general. We have expertise in resilience, production and market systems, measurement and coaching for sustainability and profitability, strategic development and policymaking, dynamic change processes, participative learning processes, spatial properties and planning, and perception analyses. Our rural Development research addresses not only the agriculture industry but the rural area as a whole, integrating the complex physical, economic and social contexts. We study the assessment and impact of spatial transformations, understanding and mapping of regional development processes, governance of rural development, and the organization and facilitation of multi-stakeholder processes.
