Post-acceptance production of biomedical science articles from author-submitted manuscript to online publication in a journal issue. I perform copy editing, proof correction and issue compilation for The Company of Biologists’ five journals, which requires a good understanding of current developments across the biomedical sciences, excellent attention to detail, and an exceptional grasp of English spelling and grammar. A high degree of flexibility is required to switch between the different styles of the journals and to balance the needs and workloads of each. Tactful communications with authors, editorial teams, typesetters and administrators must be effectively maintained at all stages of production to meet publication deadlines and uphold high quality standards.

Secondment as Science Communications Officer
-
Feb 2017 - Nov 2018
This secondment was a pilot project to explore the value of a dedicated science communicator to promote the science published in The Company of Biologists’ journals, and the charity work that supports scientists. I wrote and published content across a range of digital channels including website stories, press releases, and email and social media campaigns. I also successfully developed and launched new features including interviews with early-career first authors, and website ‘snippets’. Following the success of this pilot project, a permanent Science Communications Officer was appointed.

Editorial Assistant

Mar 2015 - May 2016
Overseeing each article published in Biology Open (http://bio.biologists.org/) from author-submitted manuscript on BenchPress through to publication on the on-line Drupal platform hosted by HighWire. Attention to detail was crucial to ensure articles were free from errors and matched house style. Effective and timely communications were essential with typesetters, authors, production and administrative staff and managing editors. Additional responsibilities included copy-editing articles and quality checking issues prior to release for other journals within The Company of Biologists, and managing the social media accounts for Biology Open.

Research project: Investigating the effect of African swine fever virus and its proteins on host MHC class I presentation, and particularly protein EP153R with similarities to ligands of host NK cell receptors. Within the African Swine Fever Virus Group, I primarily used protein characterisation techniques, recombinant protein cloning, flow cytometry, confocal microscopy, qPCR and autoradiography to provide new insights on this topic with important implications for vaccine development. The project also involved extensive mammalian cell culture, including the harvest and culture of primary porcine macrophages, and the handling and maintenance of virus stocks at SAPO 3 containment.

Working with both the diagnostic and research teams within the Mycoplasma Department at the Agency's main laboratories in Weybridge, I was responsible for performing and reporting DNA-based diagnostic tests and assisted in research projects. I was also instrumental in the development of new diagnostic ELISAs and successfully devised and implemented methods to make the diagnosis process shorter and more cost-efficient.
