Catherine recently spoke at our 2015 Spark Women's Leadership Conference. Her quiet, thoughtful, moving presentation resonated deeply with the women in the room. Her authenticity shone brightly! Thank you Catherine - you inspire me!

Funded by a small grant from the Buttedahl and Skene Learning and Teaching Innovation Fund, this pilot project involved engaging a BA in Professional Communication student to look at the program and identify potential opportunities to Indigenize both its content and its processes. As a Metis student completing the final requirements of the program, I conducted a ground-level analysis on the topic, supervised by BAPC Associate Professor and Program Head Geo Takach. For my 100 hr practicum project I worked with Animikii to assess and reinvigorate their Indigenous Innovators website and annual Gathering event. I proposed a content creation process that would center the consent and self-determination of the storyteller, also using the strengths-based approach of appreciative inquiry. • Primary and Secondary Education
    • Arts Facilitator & Artist in Residence
      • Aug 2019 - Nov 2019

Mikw Chiyam programming was developed for the Cree School Board and promotes collaborative work, bringing together students, artists, teachers and community members to create positive learning spaces for creative initiatives to flourish, while also promoting artistic literacy and recognition of the importance of the arts. The program is rooted in the belief that connecting high school students with current working professional artists can play a valuable role in increasing students’ interest and attachment to school. As an Artist in Residence, I deliver collaborative programming initiatives influenced by my own creative practices and knowledge. I work alongside teachers to generate interactive programming that promotes students’ appreciation for the arts; hooks them to learning through their personal interests; and facilitates the creation of effective, meaningful artistic productions. The overarching goal is to promote accountability, and to empower students by providing them with opportunities to discover, build and share their personal and collective voices through the arts. • Eco Advisor, Food Secure Kids Program
      • Apr 2019 - Jun 2019

Working with local schools in Fort St. John, I taught food security education to students from K-6. As part of this program, students are encouraged to explore what they eat and how their food gets to them. Each grade has specifically designed curriculum that incorporates how to grow plants and keep them healthy, what role pollinators play in our food system, and how to minimize the distance their food has traveling by supporting local producers and growers. By the end of the program students participate in planting a full garden bed that they started from seed, in their own school yard. Show less
