As an LA for biology 1, I receive weekly training in pedagogy, met with my mentor and organized biweekly study sessions. This session began with a 20-minute didactic lecture summarizing the week’s content. I would incorporate interactive activities, including solving practice questions, reviewing difficult lab problems, and sharing study strategies. One challenge was learning to engage students who had variable learning styles and levels of engagement. I was able to apply the different learning techniques towards my own studies and was rewarded with the positive feedback from students.

Developed workshops and lead discussions with other students about social issues that impact college students. Subjects include maintaining healthy relationships, HIV awareness, conflict resolution, stress management, mental health, and understanding consent. Provided important mental health resources for students during the first year of the covid-19 pandemic. This experience emphasized the importance of providing safe space for students to share their struggles, improved my team-building skills, and taught me how to discuss uncomfortable topics academically and professionally.
