I met Richard during his tenure as a 1st year AmeriCorps member. I was immediately drawn to his can-do spirit, collegiality, commitment to service and to our students and his ability to find humor and some of the toughest of circumstances. Richard was known for his jokes as a way to connect with struggling students and to peers who were having a difficult time adjusting to the school environment and rigor of service. Richard is reflective, coachable and agile and possesses a high level of self awareness and self management, social emotional competencies needed in any career. I have no doubt that we will see Richard in a management role very soon.

Richard Lucas Slusher has worked as a Writing Center Tutor under my supervision for the last academic year. During this time, he has shown patience and strong communication skills while working with tutees to help them improve their own writing. He has also shown a command of English grammar and mechanics during his time as a tutor and as a student in my creative writing class. His positive attitude and his strength as a communicator have made him a joy to work with.
