Worked on experimental validation of the GPR31 molecular model created in the Parrill Lab. Based on the model, mutants of the GPR31 receptor were created and then tested to determine if these mutations induced changes in the cellular phenology. Employed a variety of techniques and laboratory practices including basic cell culture, cell transfection, western blot assays, proliferation assays and colony forming assays. Also gained exposure to other fundamental practices in molecular biology like immunoprecipitation, transformation of plasmid DNA into E. Coli cells, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and primer design. Wrote a paper summarizing the completed research and presented a poster detailing the project findings. Research was funded by the A. Paul and Carol Schaap Foundation. Show less

Created a molecular model of GPR31, a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) implicated in the proliferation and migratory capacities of various cancer strains. The model was based on experimental phenomena and used to predict key amino acid residues involved in the interactions between GPR31 and its ligands. Applied the GPR31 model to include the creation of a pharmacophore that was used to search approved drugs for potential repurposing as chemotherapeutic targets of GPR31. Created and presented both an oral powerpoint presentation and a poster summarizing the research findings and wrote a detailed research paper. Gained experience utilizing the molecular modelling software, Molecular Operating Environment (MOE) and Linux operating system. Research program was funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
