I taught three levels of middle school band, grades 6-8. 6th grade students performed at a grade 1/2-1 level by the end of the year. 7th grade performed at a grade 2 level. 8th grade performed at a grade 2-2.5 level. We performed two concerts throughout the year where students performed a variety of music including but not limited to traditional band music, classical works, Christmas carols from a variety of cultures, arrangements of music from movie soundtracks, pop/rock pieces, and pep band style pieces. I helped coordinate All County Band as we were the host site for those rehearsals. I also took students to Piedmont Honors Band at Glen High School, taking 20 middle school students. The 6th grade band grew by 20+ members halfway through the year through positive engagement and recruiting efforts. I was also the assistant director for the Thomasville High School Marching Bulldog Band where I helped run rehearsals and events such as parades and Friday night performances at football games. We engaged middle school students by inviting them to join the marching band, and through this opportunity we had about 25 middle school marchers as well as 4 middle school guard members. We already have more middle school marchers that missed last season who have attended spring band camp and intend to march in the fall. Show less

I taught 5 different sections of chorus for students grades 6 through 8th grade. There were six different ensembles that performed. The first was the 6th grade mixed chorus. Students in this class learned to read music through sight reading work and rhythm counting. Students were exposed to a variety of music ranging from classical arrangements of Mozart and Handel to modern popular music. These students performed music with upwards of 3 parts by the end of the year. The 7th grade continued building on music reading skills through daily sight reading and counting exercises. This group also performed a variety of music, particularly enjoying world music and singing in foreign languages. This group at time sang upwards of 4-6 parts. The 8th grade also built on these skills, continuing to build in tone and music difficulty. These students also performed works with upwards of 4-6 parts. Students in the 7th and 8th grade also performed separate Men's and Women's choir music. These groups explored popular music from the 1950s, traditional sea shanty songs, and more. Students from these various ensembles performed in in the All County Chorus in Rockingham County. Students also attended the Carowinds Festival of Music. Show less

I taught all of the music classes at the school. This included a music appreciation course, beginning guitar, chorus, beginning orchestra, and advanced orchestra. I designed an original curriculum for the music appreciation course that covered basic music reading skill and explored 2000 years of music history, focusing on western music from the renaissance into the baroque, classical, romantic, and neoclassical periods into the development of modern popular music. The beginning guitar course brought players from having never played before to being able to identify the parts of the guitar, read and play from musical notation and guitar tablature, and be able to play open, bar, and power chords. The chorus evolved from students who ranged from having never done chorus before to having gone to all county choruses. By the end of the second year this chorus was giving 4 concerts in one year and competing at MPA where they received a score of Excellent. The beginning orchestra brought students from having never played orchestral instruments before to being able to play with the advanced class in a one year time, ending the year by playing music at the grade 2 and 2.5 level and performing in 2 concerts. The advance orchestra started from being barely able to read music when I started, and by the end of the second year they were playing music at the grade 3 and 3.5 level. They also performed 4 concerts, playing music that ranged in style from baroque music, modern compositions, and film score music. Show less

I run music programs and lessons for ages 5-12 where kids learn everything from kids summer camp music to introductions to a variety of genres of music. I wrote lessons specifically designed for the different age groups. I also helped with composition for an original camp musical where I also teach the music for said song. I volunteered at the month long camp working with the beginning band students, the experienced band (mostly middle school aged), the show choir, and the vocal singing competition. For the final performance I accompanied the show choir on the piano and conducted the beginner band. I worked as a summer camp counselor designing programs for campers ages 11 through 13 over the three summers. I taught music electives with my campers involving music appreciation, folk music, and general music lessons. I also led campers in group singing in what was called Song Session. I also helped lead music for Shabbat services on Friday nights and Saturday mornings at the camp.
