Research focuses on the identification and development of novel cropping/farming systems including soil health management in diversified farming systems. Teaching and mentoring under- and post-graduate students in sustainable farming and cropping systems, and digital agriculture technologies. Training and communication of locally-adaptive agronomic management practices and sustainable intensification of underutilized/orphan crops to smallholder farmers. Implementation of innovative technologies and good agronomic practices in sugarcane: Driving Nigeria’s potential towards self-sufficiency in sugar production. Our goal is to produce 15 mt of sugarcane from cultivating high-yielding sugarcane varieties on 150,000 ha across Nigeria, translating into 1.5 mt of refined sugar annually. Responsibilities: -Evaluation and recommendation of sustainable agronomic practices (fertilizers, herbicides, irrigation) and schedules for productivity increase, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability -Identification of high-yielding varieties for multiplication Key achievements: ◦Increased sugarcane productivity by 8 % within the first year through the appropriateness of varieties, fertilizer and weed management ◦Identified six promising varieties that increased yield by 5 – 10 % in the first year ratooning. ◦Evaluated and validated a pre-emergent herbicide with weed control efficiency of 98%. ◦Improved soil fertility (high organic carbon) through organic and mineral fertilizers.

Responsibilities: Improving crop productivity, profitability, soil health, resource use efficiency, and environmental sustainability through innovative, sustainable, and adaptive agronomic technologies in the Indo-Gangetic Plains. Research Project: Nitrogen and weed management in maize-wheat system under conservation agriculture of the Indo-Gangetic Plains (2013 - 2016). Key achievements: ◦Developed an adaptive nitrogen fertiliser rate with the aid of sensor technology (GreenSeeker) ◦Optimized nitrogen fertilizer application (25% fertilizer dose) by soil test value and optical sensor ◦Reduced weed density by 90% with brown manuring and herbicide combinations ◦Increased maize and wheat yields and profitability by 20 – 25 % ◦ Decoupled greenhouse gases emissions through increased soil organic carbon accumulation

Sustainable intensification and diversification of cropping systems. Research Project: Productivity, profitability, and soil fertility of sesame-based systems in North India, Gujarat. Key achievements: ◦Developed ten sesame-based cropping systems adapted to climate change ◦Diversified sesame-based system involving cotton, wheat, soybean, groundnut, mustard, castor, and green-gram linked to diverse diets and livelihoods security ◦Increased yields by 13 – 30% and profitability by 15 – 35% across crops ◦Enhanced soil carbon accumulation related to soil fertility build-up.
