The advancement of improved electrocatalysts for renewable energy technologies and the synthesis of industrially important materials are currently hindered by the limited understanding of favorable catalyst properties. We aim to address this issue by thoroughly analyzing the impact of compositional and structural material properties on catalytic efficiency through systematically altering relevant materials' properties, such as composition, surface facets, and porosity. Our research approach combines nanomaterials synthesis, electrochemical and spectroscopic characterisation, and computational studies to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between material properties and activity. By using this joint, cross-disciplinary approach, we aim to identify new strategies and tools for adjusting the desired properties of reaction-specific catalysts during synthesis or post-processing. To gain a better understanding of material property-activity relations, we determine the performance of nanomaterials in terms of electrocatalytic activity, selectivity and aging by electrochemical methods and spectroscopic techniques such as XPS and SEIRAS as well as X-ray diffraction and electronmicroscopy. We also use computational studies to gain insights into the atomic-scale processes occurring at the solid/liquid interface. Our research focuses on the development and preparation of novel conductive coordination network compounds (CCNCs) as thin films on conductive supports for use as active materials in microelectronic devices such as resistive random access memory (RRAM) and metal organic field effect transistors (MOFETs). We study the electrochemistry of these thin films using voltammetry linked to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to determine the location and fraction of lattice constituents that undergo valence changes. This behavior is then compared to results from bipolar switching measurements in all-solid state CCNC devices and theoretical calculations. Show less
