George Washington University alumnus Gilbert Cisneros, BA ’94, and his wife, Jacki, established the GW Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute to help qualified students attain academic success, build leadership skills, and engage in a long-term commitment to making a difference within the Hispanic community. The institute encompasses a pre-college summer program, college scholarship/mentorship support, a post-doctoral fellowship, and public and academic programming. The overarching goal of the institute is to address the issue of under-matching, which occurs when students of high academic potential do not matriculate to selective universities. Because this phenomenon can lead to a lack of diversity among the nation’s leadership, the institute seeks to help deserving students gain the skills and confidence needed to apply to, attend, and graduate from a selective university.
